Why can't i remember my childhood?

When I think back as far as I can, the farthest back I can remember is the night my parents split up. I don't remember what they were fighting about. Maybe my mind is trying to protect me from something traumatic. I'm scared that I was physically/sexually abused by my father. I basically can't remember farther back than close to four years old? Is it normal? What do I do?

I hear it's normal to not remember the first 4 or 5 years of life. I do, for some reason, remember more from the first four years than years 6 through 11.

I'm 21 and still struggle with dissociation, and let me tell you, you don't want to jump to conclusions about anything. You certainly don't want to let this get between you and a family member (i.e., your father) unless you have cold hard proof. You might have just had an uneventful childhood, or a slightly unpleasant one you want to move on from.

Most people dont remember before the age of 3/4 because your hippocampus is not full devoloped. your hippocampus is a part of your brain that is involved in the consolidation of new memories. its role seems to be that of a cross referencing ststem linking together aspects of a particular memory that are stored in seperate parts!

You most likeley remember your parents splitting because it was a traumatic experience for you. our brains tend to remember these kinds of experiences at young ages.

    So..no you were not molested..
you are completely normal. you dont remember child hood memories however the traumatic stuff (ur parents splittin) sticks with ya!

  • Well, you have left too much out of the story for me to make much of a comment. How old are you now and how old were you when your parents broke up? Also why did your parents break up?

I only have four memories from the ages of 3-5, and every single one of my memories are really fuzzy. I've never had any kind of trauma, I'm not repressing anything. If you're really worried about it maybe talk to your mum about why they broke up??

I can remember things from when I was around 2 lime living in a certain house and things that we did. I thought I was older but my mum said we moved out of the house when I was 2 and said the things I remember dis actually happen. Traumatic events can be blocked, this happened to me and seeing a professional helped alot. Some people try forget but they can't and some people block it out and forget so I don't agree with the other post. I don't know y u can't remember but most of the comments on here say I don't remember anything b4 the age of 4 so maybe I'm not the normal one

I don't think anyone remembers anything before the age of four.

Everything I know from before I was 4 years old was what people have told me, even then I can't remember it actually happeing.

So you are not weird...don't know about the abused part, but I doubt it, then again I don't know you

I can't remember anything before 10 years old let alone 4. But I know the reason why is because nothing back then was that important.

I only remember snippets of things from when I was young, like some things for some reason stuck in my mind even though they weren't particularly exciting or important, like my granddad giving me new boots and me wearing them and talking about them as my granddad and I were riding in the lift. I think I was about 3 or 4. I also remember someone coming to the house to do some electrics work and there were sparks flying and landing on the row of shoes standing right under and me worrying they will catch fire (they didn't). I was about 3. I also remember my Dad coming home drunk one night (I didn't see that. I was sleeping) and deciding to shave his beard off and when I saw him in bed next to my Mom in the morning I screamed so loud and was really scared because I didn't know who he was. I was also about 3. I remember the layout of the rooms in our flat at the time and where furniture stood but not any great details about anything. I remember things like sunshine coming through the windows though and yellow flowers in a cheap glass bottle on the kitchen table that smelled like honey. I remember my Mom was beautiful but inaccessible and always smoked. It's weird what our brain chooses to remember and why.

No shit. No one can remember before they're 4. The brain develops enough at like three and by the time you start remembering (purposefully thinking back) your too old to remember.

What's the point in being scared you were molested... You can't remember it anyways.

First of all, in no way should you be making any assumptions about your father like that unless you know for sure. The words sexual assault and father shouldn't even be in the same sentence unless you know for 100%% sure. I am very skeptical that there is such a thing as regressed memories. You either remember something or you don't. Traumatic events don't cause memory loss. There has been nothing to support that idea. In fact it's quite the opposite, where the person wants to forget about something happening but can't. I agree somewhat with Anonysmous, but I disagree that no one can remember before the age of four. Some people can remember bits and pieces and the rest is fuzzy, but I don't know if it's possible for anyone to remember that far back in absolute full detail. It's normal to not remember earlier than four years old.
