Why are you wishing me a merry chirstmas? iin?

Without fail, every time December rolls around I am bombarded by Merry Christmas wishes. I understand that people have good intentions but I'm still irritated that so many people believe that everyone celebrates Christmas. Americans do not reside in a Christian nation and many people do not celebrate Christmas. Is it normal to despise being wished a Merry Christmas?

That is true, not everyone celebrates Christmas. But a lot of people do. But now a days people should say happy holidays. People get offensive for some reason. I myself celebrate Christmas. But not for the christian reasons, more for gifts and family time.

"Americans do not reside in a Christian nation."

The 78% of Christians in the population of the United States begs to differ. Like it or not (I don't), America has a Christian culture, even if it has a mostly secular legal system.

Thanks, I was just about to point this same fact out.

To the OP: I am atheist but I enjoy Christmas as a family holiday. Even if I did not celebrate or enjoy christmas I would not take offense to someone wishing me a merry christmas because in their mind/culture it's a nice gesture.
If you were visiting the Middle East and gave your host a thumbs up of approval, would you want them to be understanding of the cultural difference and know you meant well or would you prefer for them to be completely offended because of what it actually means to them?
You should try to exercise being open-minded and understanding instead of letting your emotions and initial reactions take control of you.

Well most people in America celebrate Christmas. People are just trying to be nice, you don't have to acknowledge it if you don't celebrate.

I prefer "Happy Holidays." Wishing a stranger a Merry Christmas is a display of ignorance of other cultures.

I love christmas, celebrate it too! :D I'm no christian though, I just like the whole happy feeling that goes with it. ^^

  • I understand but why get mad at their good intentions?

that's like getting pissed off every time someone says "Have a nice day!"

but try replying, "I don't celebrate but thank you."

I don't understand why people have to make a big deal over this. Are you really offended by the idea of someone wanting you to have a "merry christmas"? Or do you just want to be difficult? Don't be sour, tis' the season for gathering with loved ones and being merry. Just enjoy.

    • It's not a matter of being difficult. I am offended when someone assumes I will be celebrating the same religious holiday as they are. It is ignorant and intrusive. I don't appreciate when people assume I believe in Jesus.

I don't think it's an intential label they are placing on you. Most people just say it out of habit. The greeting isn't really about you and your beliefs. It is about sharing a kindness.

        • Thank you. You're right. I shouldn't take such offense to it. Live and let live right?

I don't see a reason to get offended at a simple 'Merry Christmas', I think it's more of a formality, I think MOST people saying it don't care if, or assume, you're Christian. The employees at various stores, banks etc are probably told to say it to the customer.

    Do what I do....

    Them: "Have a Merry Christmas"
Me: "Thanks, but I have other plans"

I usually use that^^^^when someone says "have a nice day".

  • I agree with radar, I mean I'm not an active Christian though I was baptised when I was little but I accept Christmas greetings, they're being friendly and hoping you have a good time at this time of year, don't be a scrooge! XD

You've inspired me, at work I'm gonna say Happy Kwanza to every black person regardless of religion in order to be politically correct. Right?

I do hope you realize that's the exact opposite of what they were trying to say.

You sir/mam are an over sensitive arse. It just means have a happy holiday. They want to spread their joy to you. If someone says "God bless you sir" to someone it does not mean they think you believe in god.

They are just wishing you well. If a jew says happy hanukkah they are just being polite. You do not have to be a fucking prick since not everyone has the same beliefs and do not know what yours are. They are not saying "You must celebrate Christmas".

They are just being nice people. You are not the center of the universe so get over yourself. If someone would say "Hey want to spend Christmas with me" you can politely say no. You would probobly prefer to say "I dont celebrate it you dick".

So yeah complain since people are kind. Fuck you too! Next time I will be sure just to flip you off on the holidays apposed to wishing you well. How about that for a fucking merry Christmas? IS THAT BETTER?

Also you are a dumb fuck if you think there is no Christians in America. Yeah that's laughable. US does not have Christians anywhere. Are you really from the US and you are not aware of that? You know things like this make the US looks bad. Stop making the US look bad and get your facts straight you moron.
