Why are white people guilt tripped?

Why? For what reason should white people be guilt tripped? What did they do wrong recently? I just don't understand it being that I was born in 1990 and can't see what I've possibly contributed negatively towards regarding minorities and women. Can anyone tell me? There seems to be an awful lot of SJW's on this website so maybe they can answer this post. If you are white why are you guilt tripping other white people?

Are you aware that you can acknowledge that suffering has occurred in the past and that things are not equal today as a direct consequence of that past, while also being fully aware that you did not directly contribute to what occured in the past and possibly not be contributing what is happening in the present?

      No, that takes empathy.

Not even empathy, just basic thought processes.

The big calling card would be that white people oppressed black people and forced them into a life of slavery.

    Fun fact:

The first American to legally own slaves was Anthony Johnson; a black man. He had five slaves - 4 white and 1 black.

Uhm, white people have been oppressing black people for 150 years since slavery ended. Who cares about the first legal slave owner?

Now you are just generalising without even letting what I just said sink in.
Also, "slavery" wasn't truly slavery like the way the Egyptians did it. Black slaves from Africa were caught by rival black tribes and sold to predominantly white buyers (a lot of white slaves too). The ships would land in America and slaves were sold there. These slaves had to work for 4 to 7 years on the lands of their owners in order to pay their way into citizenship. They were then freed... and got compensation in the form of land or property.

I am white and I do not feel white guilt for the injustices past or present because I didn't do them. I wish they hadn't occured, but white people are not some hive-like creature with collective accountability. I am no more General Robert E. Lee than I am Malcom X.

Only Americans are, as the country was founded with built-in racism.

Because on an academic level "whiteness" and "maleness" are terms that refer to harm caused to minorities by people occupying positions of social privilege and political power. It has nothing to do with taking individuals and chastising them because of their identity. However most people do find themselves identifying deeply with both their race and their gender, and laypeople will throw around terms like "toxic masculinity", "patriarchy", and "white supremacy" without accounting for the fact that these are received as personal attacks.

This disregard for the feelings of those oppressing you seems like sheer madness. And we can see that the left is not winning, outside of college campuses there doesn't seem to be any shift culturally that actually benefits these marginalized groups in a tangible manner.

If anything the white "sjw"s as you call them, that will go out of their way to shout down white males simply are hurting people's feelings and turning people away from the social justice causes they claim to champion. So aside to the personal sense of grandiosity they feel from calling a person a bigot or racist, there doesn't seem to be any positive coming of this behavior.

That being said, I just had a friend point out to me, that the people who behave like this are not representative of those who are interested in doing work to create a more equitable society, and the activists that are really working hard are just as annoyed by these idiots as we are.

No, it's not at all normal to think white people are guilt tripped because people talk about what white people have done and continue to do. That is extremely abnormal.

See, this is probably what happens. When you see a terrorist attack committed by a Muslim, you automatically blame all Muslims for the action of that one individual. When you see a black person or a Latino person do something violent, you automatically blame all blacks or Latinos for that action. But then you see a white person do something bad, your instinct is to blame all white people...but you don't want to be blamed for what they do, so you feel guilty about it. And then you get angry at other people because you assume that they think like you do, and they're blaming you for the actions of all white people.

Now, understand that that's garbage. These so called "SJWs" (aka good people who have empathy for others) don't think like you do. They're not putting all bad things that white people do on you any more than they blame any other race for everything that race does. Unlike you, who thinks all minorities should take responsibility for the actions of their race, they don't think all white people should take responsibility for the actions of white people. They think the white people doing bad things should be responsible for the bad things they do, which isn't a reflection on white people who don't do bad things. But you don't understand that, because that's not how you view other races. Try to work on that - stop blaming millions or billions of people for something that one person does just because they look like them, and you'll stop thinking people are blaming you for what the actions of people who look like you.

    Hope that helps.

I'd venture a guess that OP is talking about the current climate and how they are mid 20s so they don't feel responsible for anything in the past 150 yrs, also no sane white person born in 1990 would dare utter a word of criticism about minorities due the political climate of the last 20 some odd years. OP could also be confused as to why given the programs at their disposal minorities still haven't moved past their overwhelming poverty. OP could also be confused as to why if you take whites put them on an island, you get England. Take Asians put them on an island, you get Japan or Taiwan. Take blacks and put them on an island, you get Jamaica or Haiti. Vastly different levels of "successful" societies.

White people alive today haven't done much but you have to understand that racism as an institution is ingrained into the fiber of American society. As a white person if you continue to passively let events run their course then you send the signal that you are satisfied with the way things are and have been. Not standing up against prejudice can be just as harmful as actively promoting it.

There's no real reason; white guilt is exploiting the good nature of many people, deluding them into thinking they did something wrong for existing.

It would be interesting (and controversial) research to see if the white race has an exceptional quality for guilt. This would probably tie in with empathy, which is also perhaps why white people enjoy the company of pets more than other races.
