Why are these considered as bad words?

Okay. Some of you are probably thinking "Cuz they're inapproriate!" or "cuz they just are" (I heard that a lot). But I'm still going to ask.

Why "shit" is considered a bad word when it has the same meaning as "crap" and "poop"? How is saying "poop" inappropriate?

And how is "What the hell!" a bad word? They say it's relating to blasphemy (my family is religious) but preachers talk about "hell" all the time and they say the word "hell" but how is it a bad word if I just add "what the" in the word "hell"? I don't get it.

I'm NOT trying to say that we should use bad words freely cause are some that are ACTUALLY inappropriate such as the f word, motherf*****, a**hole etc. But there are just some bad words that I have no idea why it's considered "bad". What do you think?

Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

People always try to police what other people can say or do, who you can have sex with and how and what sexual activities are permitted etc. I fucking hate that shit.

Human societies make up rules of what's appropriate and what isn't. Sometimes, these have a rational basis. A society where it was considered appropriate to immediately kill anyone who looked at you the wrong way wouldn't last long, since only one person would be left standing at the end of the bloodbath.

Often, the rules are about showing you belong to a certain group of people. Humans aren't very well equipped to survive alone, so belonging to a group is important. Complying with taboos indicates you are willing to go along with the rules of the group you belong to. You're "one of us", not "one of them", and so you are deserving of help in times of need.

If you started to hang out with a biker gang, you'd be looked at suspiciously if you never used the sort of words your parents find unacceptable, and said "heck", "darn" and "poop".

If you started to use "hell", "damn" and "shit" in the company of your Southern Baptist friends, you would be indicating that you were no longer one of them.

So yeah, the words are "dirty" just because the group you belong to has decided they are inappropriate. There's no rational reason why "shit" should not be used in "civil" company, but "poop" is okay.

You clearly believe "fuck", "motherfucker" and "asshole" are so dangerous that you can't even bring yourself to type them in a completely anonymous post. Why is that? You obviously know the words, and I'm sure you heard them in your head when you typed your censored versions. Do you think God is watching what you type and listening to what you say, but your thoughts are private and so they don't really count? Sounds like a pretty pathetic sort of god.

What a lot of this comes down to is religion and the people who control religion - in other words, the people who make money off the members of the club. If a preacher stands up and shrieks that the congregation is full of sinners with "dirty" thoughts, many will be gullible enough to hand over money in an effort to get rid of the guilt they feel. A full collection plate is good news for the preacher, because he knows he will be able to run off to his favorite hooker as soon as the church is empty.

A profitable religion sets the rules in such a way that perfectly natural human impulses become "sinful", since this is the way to make the most money.

By the way, "hell" really isn't considered a swear word at all in Britain (where I live). "Bloody" used to be considered just as rude as "fuck" here, but that has changed over the last few decades. And that't the other thing that proves the taboos you're asking about are completely arbitrary: they change depending on where you are and over time.

In the end, words are just words. The only thing that really matters is your intent and how you use them; if you use them to hurt or if you use them to make the world a better place.

    • I agree with the last paragraph you wrote. But I don't get why you're criticizing me for censoring those three words. No, I don't think it's a sin to say those words in quotes, I just censored them because I wanted to clarify on my post that I consider them (personally) as bad words. If it bothers u so much, I can edit them for you.

I don't agree that "shit" should be considered a bad word; since everyone does "shit", some people are full of "shit", while others simply are "shit".

However, "hell" is a bad word. It pertains to a fictitious netherworld that does not exist in this Universe, or in any other Universe, and is entirely a concoction in some peoples' twisted and demented minds; unless you are referring to places like Yemen, Venezuela, North Korea, the South and South-West sides of Chicago, some parts of Mexico, etc.

Honestly I'm much less concerned with curse words than I am with misspellings and bad grammar.
