Why are people such attention whores?

People seem to attack the most popular person in the room. This goes for anything. We attack celebrities since they are popular but we know they have a shit load more money than we do. We will aggravate and attack for anything but why? So we can feel better about our own shitty lives? So why are people such attention whores? I find it annoying this is the case. I mean we do this with everything. Like mocking someone else makes us some how better. We do this to politicians, police, teachers, parents, celebrities regardless if we actually have anything against the person.

    It helps maintain self-esteem. People do it when there is little to no chance of negative repercussions. It's human nature and it's ugly.
