Why are christians so hung up about sex?

Don't all the negative rules Christians have about sex come from a hatred for the body? Don't they treat the body as if it were dirty?

This is a topic that will differ from religion to religion. I am a Catholic so I will give you the Catholic answer to this question as best as I can. I hated having to confess to my priest about things and I would ask questions about why it was so taboo.

The best reason I can come up with from those discussions is this:
Sex is meant to help us carry out God's commandment in the Genesis Story with Adam and Eve. "Be Fruitful, Multiply fill the Earth and subdue it." Genesis 1 verse 28.

It is for this reason that we are supposed to have sex. Being an older priest, my priest had a bit of a sarcastic streak from time to time.

He mentioned in another time when I asked "If it is so sinful why does it feel good?" He explained. "It is meant to feel good so that we will be willing to have children." The sarcastic part was to come. "If it didn't feel completely great to have sex I don't think so many people would be willing to have children and endure 18-20 years' worth of parenting." He did mention that parenting can be a blessing but when it goes rough for some parents it feels like a burden.

There was no sermonizing about the evil one making it feel good and so forth.

He then touched upon something else. Something as it pertains to masturbation. He said that often people will envision someone else while they are masturbating. This is sinful because it objectifies that person.

In the Catholic church we are taught that because we were created by our creator in his likeness and image, we shall give one another respect because in each of us, there is a little bit of God. When you think about someone and doing nasty things to them, you have forgotten there is a little bit of God in them and in a sense, at least in your own mind, you have denied that they also are made like God.

I have been told there has been some bit of relaxation on how strict this is. I have heard now it is considered more or less a menial or lesser sin to engage in sexual activity outside of procreation. In the past, certain acts had been considered grave or mortal sins, carrying with them a greater burden as it were of sinfulness.

It is considered sinful for those spiritual reasons. I realize and I am willing to acknowledge the points that others removed from religion will point out: Sex that does not produce children does not help the growth of the religion. People who say this have a valid point, if they wish to strip away all of the metaphysical and faith based reasons behind it. You have to have new members coming to church in order for a religion to survive.

Many other Christian religions both in the past and in the present consider sex between two married people a beautiful and sacred act. The Quakers who came to the Americas are said to have sewn newlyweds into a sort of sheet-like pouch on the first night of their marriage to help them "seal" their bond. This was depicted in the movie The Patriot.

Can you sum up your post in like, 4 words? It's too long and I didn't read it, but I saw something about the patriot at the end and wondering if you could have substituted for the movie Total Recall, or perhaps Dumb and Dumber.

      Thank You.

To say what needed to be said could not be said in four words without appearing rude, overly sure of myself, arrogant or whatever. It was a post I thought about before I typed it.
Can you say in four words, without sounding crass, rude, arrogant or overly sure of yourself why Christians are hung up about sex?
I am curious to read it.

OK, 4 words: That was total bullshit. How many people have been killed in the name of one religion or another through the ages? How many people have been killed in the name of making love to one another?

We don't have sex because we're dirty. It's because we want to save ourselves for that special person. It's suppose to be beautiful and sacred between two lovers, not lustful and dirty. I don't think masturbation is this "sin", either. It may be the porn addiction where it leads to problems, but that's me.

straight up people wont believe religion in the end, it comes down to morals. Would you like to marry a girl who you know had hundreds of dicks in her because ''you only live once'' or ''cause it feels good'' atleast me no, i want her all to my self pure and clean so if we would give that and want that same respect and previlage why wouldnt we give that to the creator of the universe and of us?

We dont have sex before marriage because then we have no boundaries or commitments cause if we did something so meaningful with the power to give life without a commitment what will stop us from doing that with someone later when we're married if we did it already when we werent ?

if God said not to i wont do it thats all for me, why would I as the created be trying to prove wrong the Creator aha stupidity, its up to you but what is said is said the rest is what you choose to do, its all a choice.

Could be inability to face reality like the other parts are about.

Sex will not be better if you wait and respect nor will it be better if you go all around. It is just sex. You know the thing needed to reproduce. The thing that is wired in our brain to feel good. So it is all between your ears.

That however is too much reality, so you can spice it up with a bit of religion to make it special through the religion. (In comparison to those that just embrace it as it is and see the beauty in reality.)

I'm not talking about Christianity particularly here, but when arbitrary rules are imposed on the sex lives of others, they usually have their root in jealousy. If not, then fear.

Female circumcision, for instance. Or forcing certain modes of dress on women. Or prohibiting women having sex before marriage. Or saying that men shouldn't sleep with other men.

No you have it all wrong. It's about keeping the body clean and pure and having self respect. Letting a guy take advantage of you and letting a guy use your body for his pleasure is disgusting and horrible. Male and female Christians know this and respect each other. It's not about being married and having a title it's understood that if you are married you have that mutual respect with each other that's why most people use that as their guide. Christians have much much better sex. It's true. So many non christian guys wonder why girls dump them or don't seem into them but it's because they don't have any respect and that gets old fast. So to all the guys out there who are selfish and don't care about their partner during sex you would be so surprised at how much better sex is when the girl is really into it and not just faking it.

Keep in mind that back then, marriage was not based on romance or love, but out of bartering and protection. Women and men were separate until marriage. Therefore, having sex with someone your parents didn't approve of would have been considered lady theft.

I'm catholic and I disagree with your assumption that these guidelines are there because of hatred of the body. The reason why we are able to have sex is so we can create life.
It's a beautiful thing. So beautiful that is should not be looked upon as something small that you can do with just anyone.
Also your body is so precious that it should not be shared with just anyone. Therefore I could argue that it's the atheist that hate their body's because they treat it as disposeable and don't attach as much value to it as we do..

btw just because I COULD argue this does not mean I think all atheist do. It's just a different perspective then your stupid generalization.

The rigid ones see sex for procreation ONLY.
They can never enjoy it, because the minister might fown on it.

Following that logic you could also preach to people to be gay instead of abstinent. Doesn't produce babies either.

Which also seems the way of the christian with all the little boys 'abused' by the church. All for limiting offspring aye;)

If I was a religion I would want to control sex. Almost everyone has sexual urges, so if I tell them that only sex endorsed by my religion is good and all other sex is disgusting then my religion is going to be more successful.

But there are a load of "live and let live" Christians out there who aren't so hung up about sex. It's just that the ones that are make a lot of noise and get noticed more.

i think either none of its ok,like in some middle eastern cultures, where women cant even show their eyes,or all of its ok. no part of the human body is nasty or whatever u would call it,and no urge is nasty either, but u should have a real connection with someone if ur gonna have sex with em.i do believe in some sort of self control, but ur not bad just because u have sex with someone u have a connection with, besides marriage? thats just dumb, like some paperwork and a little ceremony that costs money proves 2 someone that u love them.besides u could never love someone so much that u cant love someone else, normal relationships just dont work, not 4 everyone

Ok I'm christian and totally agree with what ur saying tylee

Also I wear short shorts and bikinis and low cut shirts and im a fairly attractive girl and I even go to church sometimes with my shorts on and no one says anything the reason i do this is either because I just got back from practice or I didnt feel like changing so basically it isn't prohibited in all cultures cause I know alot of Christian girls that do the exact something as me
