Who is the best beatle?

John was the outspoken rocker, Paul was the cute and sometimes sappy "pop" musician, George was the aloof talent, and Ringo was the funny one... right?

It turns out these labels were really very interchangable. Paul wrote perhaps the hardest rocking song for the group "Helter Skelter." And long before John met Yoko, Paul was getting in to the Avant-garde scene (which John was actually very envious of).

As leader of the Quarrymen and the early Beatles, John was described [by friends and the band itself] as being quite shy. Also, perhaps the sappiest song ever written by the Beatles was John's "Julia."

In old Beatles interviews, George often pipes up with the wittiest remarks. He also wrote quite a few of their hits like "Still My Guitar Gently Weeps," "Something," and "Here Comes the Sun," just to name a few.

Ringo wrote some hit songs like "Octopus's Garden," sang as Billy Shears in "A Little Help From My Friends," and showcased his exceptional drum talents (often critiqued as "nothing special") in the song "Tomorrow Never Knows." (To be fair, I think that the simplicity of Ringos beats in many of the songs PROVES him to be an excellent drummer. He knows when to get fancy and when to keep it simple.)

Each of the Beatles were very edgy and funny, talented, and good-looking (Say what you will about George Harrison, but how many of you out there have had hundreds of thousands of girls having panic attacks when they see you? [If you are the Jonas Brothers, ew, or Justin Bieber, ew, don't answer]) BUT, WHICH BEATLE IS THE BEST, AND WHY?

John Lennon 26
Paul McCartney 29
George Harrison 18
Ringo Starr 6
Pete Best 1
Stuart Sutcliffe 0

I like McCartney a bit more than Lennon, but don't ask me who writes better songs! Impossible to decide!

John Lennon was the most inspiring. The others are great, but they don't have his towering natural spirituality.

  • george harrison is my favorite cute and soulful "my sweet lord" is so stirring it really takes me to a place that is bitter sweet. I also like the honesty of john lennon and his courage to go against the mob. i especially liked to read his playboy interviews (i found it in a small paperback version) fascinating and searing.
how could anyone murder him? and how could anyone attempt to murder george? oh and i like paul and ringo too

There's NO QUESTION, it was John Lennon!

John consistently kept improving lyrically and musically. John did not like staying in early pop sounds, so he experimented with instruments and new sounds. Ever notice how Paul STILL wrote those cheesy sappy love songs even when the rest of the band was wrapped up in psychedelia? Paul does have talent, but he is so overrated. Everyone knows it was John who was the catalyst and leader of that band!

My favorite Beatles song is "Dear Prudence", but overall, songs written by George Harrison are my favorite. Frank Sinatra even said that "Something" is the best love song ever. "Savoy Truffle" off of their album "The Beatles", (White Album),is a great song too. Good post and well written!

Lennon wrote my favorite rock and roll song ever recorded, Free As a Bird, so for that reason (and many more) he would be my favorite Beatle, but Paul had so many great songs after they broke up, and is still going strong.

I saw Ringo live, it was amazing. He still sounds like he did forty years ago.

Free As a Bird is awesome, but my favorite is the other one that the Beatles released after his death, Real Love. The lyrics, the melody, everything is great. BUT, Free As a Bird is great too because in a way it shows that not even death could separate the Lennon/McCartney duo. When they collaborated, they would not normally write the song together, but instead right portions of a song separately and then combine them, or one would write something and the other would make little changes. Lennon wrote Free As a Bird, but then McCartney added in that last little part "Whatever happened to, the life that we once knew..." which really completes the song for me.

GREW UP AS A TEENAGER IN THE 1960'S WHEN THE "BEATLES" WHERE POPULAR.

TO ME THEY WERE NOT VERY GOOD SINGERS AND WERE NOTHING BUT A BUNCH OF DRUG SUCKING BRITISH HIPPIES.
