Who is a psychologist here?

So... everyone on this site just acts as a psychologist... So I think that it would be nice to know how many are truly professionals in this area. Personally, I like reading a lot about psychology, but I would never want to be a psychologist, since I don't think I have the right skills to be one.

So, which one are you?

I work as a psychologist 3
I have a degree in psychology 5
I am studying psychology at the university 6
I am a psychology aficionado 4
I am interested in being a psychologist 21
Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

I'm studying psychology at university, and I've studied it at school for four years.

No person who really understands psychology would run around making definitive judgements on people's mental condition on a website. There are a bunch of reason why we don't do this. Firstly, you can't make those judgements solely based on self-report, since self-report always has lots of biases associated with it (the umbrella term for these is inventively called "self-report bias"). In basic terms: people self-edit, so there's no way of knowing if the information you're basing the assessment on is accurate. This is even more of a problem if you're not conversing face-to-face, because people self-edit online more easily.

Secondly, it's considered unethical to both make those judgements publicly and unless the judgement is solicited by the person you are assessing. This is because, especially if someone is venerable like a lot of people asking for help here might be, they are more likely to cling onto what you say and place high importance on it compared to if they were not venerable. This multiplies the effect of your initial inaccuracy. Psychological evaluations are supposed to be private to avoid causing distress to the "patient" by publicise their condition, but this is a public site even if the usernames make us anonymous on the surface.

Anyone who does try to seriously evaluate someone online is ignorant about the potential problems with and dangers of what they're doing. Most of them probably mean well (although some just look for the praise and attention you get from looking clever and helpful), but you really shouldn't be doing it. If you think someone might have a problem, you should ask them to see a real-life professional even though they probably won't like hearing that.

  • Contrary to popular belief, the majority of psychologists don't go into counselling, they go into research.

True. And the psychologists who actually do counseling rely more on common sense than in theory.

You should also include licensed practical counselors (LPC) and licensed clinical social workers (LCSW) in your pole options. You're welcome : ) Lol.

I've been so crazy for so long, I know as much about being nuts as any shrink.

You forgot the "none of the above" choice. My advice comes from life experiences which may not be part of my life, or any life.

I have only studied psychology. See. in the field of psychology you can have all the qualifications you need you'll still need life experience. So I'm doing volunteer youth work before returning to study psychology for a third year

  • With all the claiming that people have mental or personal dissorders, you would expect there to be atleast some - but no.

I just make psychological observations based on my own experiences as a human being.

I usually try to give some advice (when asked) to people I can identify with. But people who have a totally different way of thinking scare me.

My friend (a guy) makes everyone call him "Psycho". He made that his own nickname, and he won't respond to ANYTHING other than that. I think it's kinda weird.

Well I was tutored by a psychologist for a project in school. It was only a year but they has great credentials. It was a mentor-ship thing and it was fun. I already really liked psychology though and was studying it.

  • I've studied it, but am not a certified psychologist.

This being evident through the fact that I often make a correct diagnosis hahahaha.
