I said I did because my pair was higher than his pair, he says he should’ve won because his Ace was higher than my Seven

You had the better hand. The only time a kicker is used if you had an identical value of pairs vs your opponent and the kicker is needed to break the stalemate. Since you have 2 queens vs 2 tens you win because your two pair was superior, the kicker isnt necessary to break the stalemate.

the only way the fifth card woulda mattered would be if yall both had the same 2 pair
The value of the single card is only a deciding factor if the two pairs are equal.

There are many versions of Poker; in most the rule you cite does not apply. Only a few does it apply to.
I suggest getting a book on the rules of card games.
You should not be playing poker if you need to ask the question. The rules are very straight forward, unless a special house rule is announced prior to the game. Occasionally these special house rules happens that if someone gets a certain had of fairly random cards, that it's the winning hand (beats everything else): These kind of house rules often occur after someone significant had died - and it's a hand that the person once had that has a memorable story attached to it. This was more common in the old west and into the mid 1950's. Fairly rare now.

I'm crap at card games in general and I've never been able to get my head around the rules for poker, but even I know that two Jacks and two Queens beats two Jacks and two Tens.
Surely the only way his hand would have won was if you'd agreed before dealing that an Ace trumps everything.
