I will always prefer 2D animation. I like the feel of it and it looks prettier. I am huge fan of Anime.

I think the 3 D Animation is really, really amazing; don't get me wrong. Stuff like Pixar and Dreamworks' movies are great. But I have noticed when I have watched older movies. You can see the limitations in them. Don't believe me? Go back and look at the first Toy Story.

I am a fan of the 2 D hand drawn animations. They are timeless and will remain timeless. Don Bluth tried so hard to return to a "Golden Age of Animation" and sadly has had to face Disney releases which coincide with the releases of all of his major cartoons. 2 D is done with tender loving care, hand drawn, hand painted and they are masterpieces of artwork done in the traditional style.

While the 3 D are masterpieces, they are done on computers and it just doesn't seem quite the same to me.

You think Don Bluth was crushed by Disney? Oh no, it was the reverse my friend. Don Bluth left Disney because the execs were in charge of story. He then made his own movies that nearly destroyed Disney Animation. Great Mouse Detective, Oliver and Company, and the Black Cauldron could not compete with any of the non Disney releases. American Tale and NIMH took the spot light and the money in the box office. Oh and Disney had to compete with Spielberg's Land Before Time as well. No wonder Disney nearly fell. Disney Animation was Bankrupt until Little Mermaid. But by the time Disney's silver age hit Bluth was making terrible movies like Rockadoodle.

And what happened after Disney's silver age? The execs pissed off Katzenberg and he left Disney for Dreamworks. Katzenberg banked on Shrek and then Disney killed it's 2D department once and for all.

If it's so limited (thus easier to make), why aren't there anymore good cartoons?
What happened to Tom an Jerry? Road Runner? Pinky and the Brain?

Quality of cartoons has slumped for several reasons. I have for instance seen newer Warner Brothers cartoons but they haven't got the same "feel" to them. Something is missing, not quite right or something and it is difficult to articulate and say exactly what.
I think one of the major problems has to do with Political Correctness NINNIES out there who do not want cartoons to show violence because parents who choose to work instead of raising their children, blame violence depicted in cartoons, TV shows, Movies, Video Games and Computer games for incidents when their badly behaved little hell-raisers commit acts of violence against their siblings, friends or others.

Kids don't get values through osmosis; values have to be taught.

And it is ridiculous that court cases are won where parents trying to excuse the bad behavior of their kid and their own negligent parenting from seeing Bugs Bunny clobber Elmer Fudd over the head with a wooden mallet too many times.

As ridiculous as it is, they are winning and they have really toned down a lot of the antics that made those old cartoons funny.

The limits I can see are in older CGI movies. The technology changes too fast, the CGI studios of Pixar and others has to keep pace. Movies released 10 years ago are obvious. Computing power and rendering was a little different and it is apparent on older CGI based cartoons. It is the way I meant that they are limited and will appear so as time continues.
I think a whole new secondary industry will be created in re-working those older films and the owners will find ways to give you four or five editions of the same movie based upon the 3-D modeling they will use to update it.

3D models don't look as good as 2D models in my opinion.

3D animation generally looks crappy, or is not realistic enough to provide a medium for mature story telling.

  • Depends on... which particular animation is better.

Never seen a good 3D animation though.

  • I don't like 3D. I think it's dumb we have to wear glasses when they have the technology to see 3D without. Anyways, lots of side effects come with 3D. Apperently kids under 8 that watch 3D can have their vision screwed up. Head aches, some people have been sick from watching too much. I watched three movies at the theatres and I did not like the 3D on it. Next technology pl0x.

I spent half of the Harry Potter film looking for those dumb glasses. I thought I'd dropped them on the floor but they were up on my head.

      • I hear you, the ones I had to wear were always kinda falling off and it felt weird having a cheap piece of plastic there on my face. I then tried to watch the movie without them, the screen was blurry. I hope 3D will vanish someday.

Every art style has its niche. 2D? Yep. 3D? sure. Stop motion? definatly.

when it comes to shows and films I have a soft spot for 2D. This is mostly due to being a huge anime fan. ^.^"
I also respect 3D due to my interest in game design and graphics.
One thing that does sadden me though is that instead of embracing the new arts with the old many people simply decide to dispatch with the old when somthing cheaper and easier to use comes along. Not that I can blame people for wanting to get results for cheaper in less time, but some part of me feels we are losing older art styles.
I like pen drawings. Thankfully, this is an art that still has quite the following.
I own a set of sketching pencils and dip pens. ^.^

2D animation just has more character to me, for the most part. I think the designs and art styles tend to be more interesting. However, many video games have proven that 3D can also look very unique and stylish, but movies havn't really caught on to that yet.

I prefer 2d, however 3d is good too. Personally as long as its animated its good. Well depends on the story line to but I just prefer watching animation over live action. Since there's no limit, you can do whatever you want with it. Also there is a lot of work now a days that mixes both. Which looks really cool.

I like them both! but I guess i'm more of a 2D sort of person because it holds a little nostalgia for me in some ways, and i'm a bit of a Miyazaki fan.

I prefer 2D for purely aesthetic reasons. The majority of my favourite animated films or television programs are 2D. 3D lacks the same visual charm for me, that's why I find it so disappointing that 3D has become the popular stylistic choice for animations now.

Belleville Rendezvous, Akira, Ghost in The Shell, Tekkonkinkreet, Dumbo, The Lion King, and a million cartoons from my childhood make me smile.

The only 3D animated films that stick in my mind are Toy Story, Monster's Inc and Shrek 1 & 2. And that's not because I like how they look, but because the stories and scripts are so sharp.

3D has its nice moments, but nothing compares to hand-drawn animation.

Have any of you "Lame Brains" ever watched "Spooks, Creeps, or The Ghost Talks"? back in 1952 by "Shemp, Larry, and Moe"? There was some really great, ahead of the times 3D shorts.

TOUGH QUESTION... 2D has been around since Gertie the Dinosaur and 3D is on the new side.

2D was invented by newspaper cartoonists, so it was for entertainment. 3D was invented out of practicality and it's main starting point was flight simulators.

Where does stop motion fit in this? Animation is anything but easy and I love all of it.
