"Good things come to those who wait."
    That's bullshit.
Seize the day. Success is action.

      +1. Exactly!
I hate waiting! Good things come, when you make it so they come.

    Be yourself.

It could take someone their whole lifetime to figure out who they are. Instead of saying that to someone, tell them to be the person that they want to be, not the person they feel pressured to be.

Absolutely, thumbed back up. It's trite advice and your alternative is 100 times better.

"Be myself??" ... "But I'm a total cunt!! They all told me that was the problem!?!?"

Yeah it's just really generic and unhelpful to tell someone to "be themselves"

  • While I wouldn't classify it as advice per say, its really confusing to me why people give supporting or even outright blatant lies to some of the fat people who post videos of themselves singing on YouTube. I would keep it neutral if I even bothered commenting. Those people arent doing the person who made the video any favors by telling them nonsense.

"If you don't go out with someone you're not interested in, you're scum." Um... never in my life have I ever heard this "advice."

I would say it's "you can do anything you set your mind to" just because "anything" is way too unrealistic.

    • I've declined to date people I wasn't interested in and was considered scum for not giving him or her a chance. I've been insulted by the person that I declined to date and in some cases, the people that they knew. I honestly could not go out with a person I'm not interested in because it only gives the person false hope and I don't want to lead anyone on.

I'm sorry that you were insulted for that, but rather than call it "advice," I'd say that's more of retaliation by people too stupid and resentful to realize the kindness of not leading someone on.

You can do anything if you put your mind to it,

Its not true, it's impossible for every person to get their dream job, not everyone can be an actor or musician or. Psychoanalyst, not everyone can be their own boss.

Also for me, be yourself. That doesn't help

That's a very good question. Although, in all honesty, aren't they all kind of stupid? There isn't a winner in that bunch of lies.

It's either people telling others something that isn't true just to soothe them (which is the religious aspect) or it's trying to make people be nice to each other when people would rather not be nice.

The being nice one. I am nice, I think.. Even if people are mean. But there is a line. If someone is bullying someone else or stepping over said line I will turn :P

College will land you a high paying job... It gives young people the unrealistic idea that they can wing it and find a job in the real world no matter what degree they have. So they go to college for four years on their parents' dime and get a degree in Gender Studies or some bullshit like that and then get out and hold up signs on Facebook saying that their inability to find a stable office job is the fault of the Patriarchy. Yes, I DO go to school with people like this and of other varying majors.

This is why many schools require you to have a solid career plan before they accept you here.

Is astronomer a solid career plan? What if your parents gave you 10 million dollars? Would they let you get 10 degrees if you can?
