Your best is all that you can give. Your best is a do, as far as I'm concerned.
Many around me who sail boats too, think that "shit happens" (bad stuff, like falling overboard or getting hurt). I don't agree. If one is paying attention to what they are doing and have maintained their equipment properly, then there is no reason to expect bad things to happen.
Same with the first of the two sayings. Do it or not, but don't start out half way defeated by saying you'll try. Self confidence is a very good thing.
Both options oversimplify the problem space a bit. But, if you want to make something happen, plan carefully, identify contingencies, and make it happen. In many cases, doing your best means lowering your expectations because you wanted to quit.
If the first one means do your best even if it isn't impressive, then that, if not then none of them, one is telling you to try the best you can do rather than do the best you know they can do and the other seems like it is expecting you to fufill a standard and that your best can meet the standard.
