I really like all 3 but if I had to pick I would go with Elvis Costello, then The Beach Boys, then The Smiths. Really they are too different to compare.
Beach boys.
Brian wilson did some amazing stuff that none of those two even dared too do.
it's obvously the Smiths! I don't listen to them that often anymore, but used to love Morrissey so much!
where the fuck is metalica? why dont you put metalica you fuck cunt chode dick asswipe?
None of them are my 'favourite' but out of the three I would say The Smiths
Costello before he got old and dull. Smiths a close second though it's a pretty close race with all three. Where is Kyuss on the list.
The Beach Boys. Wilson had a rare ear for melody and harmony that just leaves the other two artists in the dust, musically. Lyrically, I think they're the best too. Morrisy couldn't write purely happy lyrics if he tried, whereas the Beach Boys covered a range of topics ranging from love, transience, heartache and depression, and youth.
I can say what my favourite is, but that doesn't make them in any way better. In truth, I genuinely like them all. All three stand out from crowd in terms of taking music in another direction.
I'm going to argue for The Smiths, though, because it's rare that a band combines one of the best lyricists of all time with one of the best guitarists of all time. Living so close to the house Morrissey grew up in kind of means something to me, too. He belongs to us in this city. Along with The Stone Roses, The Charlatans, Joy Division, New Order, Happy Mondays, The Fall, and James (I'm choosing to ignore the Bee Gees, Take That, and Oasis). Out of all of them, The Smiths are who I'm proudest of and who I identify with most.
It's like asking which colour is better. I think art and music is more about taste and preference and less about good and bad.
