Which is better?

Is it better to be really sweet, loveable, cute and polite but not respectable or to be a mean foul asshole but you can do great work so you deserve a lot of respect?
Which would you rather befriend and why? The sweet person won't ever hurt you but also won't be able to give you as much powerful knowledge/ money/ influence.

to be loved but not respected 24
to be a respected asshole 12

As a friend? I don't take money or "influence" into account in friendships. If you're an arsehole deep down I'll pretty much rule you out as a friend regardless of any other traits you have. No point hanging around with people who have terrible personalities. I wouldn't choose to spend time with someone purely because they were rich, and even if I did I wouldn't call that person a "friend". Knowledge is good, but it's nothing compared to being a nice person.

It's hard to imagine that someone with a wonderful personality wouldn't garner some sort of respect. However, being a skillful asshole may get someone limited respect, but that respect would only be for his or her talent, not his/her character and personality. I'd say the happier individual is the one with a lovely personality.

    • Reality says something else. Sweet, nice, friendly people tend to get abused and mugged while people tend to suck up to and admire assholes.
