When it comes to bands founded in the 60s I'd rather go with Deep Purple or Pink Floyd.

Led Zeppelin. Why? Because each song is like 2-4 songs in one. Only musical genius can do that. Fool in the Rain, you can groove and then samba and then groove, yet again. Orgasm to me ears.

The Beatles (John and Paul) wrote songs for The Rolling Stones. Eric Clapton played on songs for the Beatles. Eric Clapton was in the Yardbirds. Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin) replaced Eric Clapton in the Yardbirds.

Computer says The Beatles > Led Zeppelin > The Stones. (with the acknowledgement that Led Zeppelin are the best musicians of the three).

  • My opinion?

The Beetles were the "boy band" of their era.
Led Zeppelin rocked...but easily burned out.

The Stones moved with time...and despite that fact, they're all still alive... for whatever that's worth.

Actually, the Beatles were the innovators of the whole rock movement. Lennon/McCartney is one of the most prodigious and respected song writing teams ever, and considering the very short length of time they worked together, certainly produced more hits and everlasting songs than any other composer duo.
They wrote music that has been played by everyone from Frank Sinatra to the Boston Pops Orchestra.
Stones were not innovators, but followed the trends. They did not experiment nor were they as widely copied.
Led Zeppelin was just a great rock band but were in no way at the forefront of the industry.
Not to say that any of these three were not great bands and all have a huge following. But had the Beatles not opened the doors, then none of these bands would probably have made the name for themselves that the did.

      • With all due respect...

I would expect, and have received...almost word-for-word that response from many who grew up screaming and crying at their concerts. When I was little, they were still together and I was a major fan. I've since grown up.

In that era, boy bands were revered with godlike status. It's hard for a generation that considered suicide when they disbanded to let that go...and that generation will do anything to protect their pride.

"We all live in a yellow submarine
        A yellow submarine
        A yellow submarine..."

...words of truly "prodigious and respected song writers." Complete with an animated psychedelic cartoon.

They had a couple of songs that I could bring myself to give credit to...including one that gave Eric Clapton his debut, but sometimes sub-standard musicians stumble into greatness like his.

Frank Sinatra would do anything to make a buck or get laid...and covering Beetles songs would certainly guarantee either. The Boston Pops Orchestra, originally started by second-chair artists from the Boston Symphony Orchestra, was infamous for producing "elevator covers" and holiday songs. Their list of covers includes the Bee Gees. Hey...what the fuck...they're rock-n-roll hall of famers right?

I actually don't like Led Zeppelin. I used to, but I've heard, and played, every song of theirs until my ears bled. 40 years of hearing the same 12 songs will wear thin on the best of us.

...now I've read this response back to myself realizing that I sound like an asshole. I don't mean to. I mean...my god...we all like what we like. Music speaks to our souls, and it doesn't really matter how talented the musicians who bring that feeling to us are, it's all good.

...but the Beetles were a boy band, complete with screaming and crying girls, and they stumbled into a lucky shot at fame. Very few from their generation will ever admit that.

Do you know of any "boy band" that wrote their own music, let alone some of which will live on forever?
Are there ANY "boy bands" that actually played instruments, let alone played the music on their albums? I don't know of any, but I really don't have any interest in that genre.
As for Yellow Submarine, it was written by Ringo, not Lennon/McCartney, and for a funny little experimental film, at that. On the other hand, "turn off your mind and float downstream, this is believing.." wasn't written to sell records, but a song written to try to put a psychedelic experience into words. What "boy band" ever tried to communicate experiences with their audiences, especially considering they wrote none of their own music? For that matter, what "boy band" ever cared for anything other than money? AFTER the Beatles got rich, they went to school to become educated musicians, to further expand their craft, not their bank balances.
Crowd reaction does not a "boy band" make.
The Beatles began as a pop band, for sure, but no band has ever equaled the Beatles in experimentation and innovation, whether the results were good or bad.
I don't think we will agree on this, so I don't really intend to continue this discussion; it will be up to the members of IIN to listen to the "boy band" music and the Beatles, and decide for themselves.

          • I agree that we will never agree on this, but to answer your question, yes I can mention a band who has not only equaled, but surpassed the Beetles' experimentation and innovation. That would be Pink Floyd.

I could list many more, actually...but that one, in particular, will trump any other...especially for recognition's sake.

            • ...and, just for the record, I'm not especially a Pink Floyd fan. I just respect the fact that few others can compare with their level of experimentation and innovation.
