Which antivirus to use?

I am assembling a new PC for gaming. I have installed a few basic softwares which include an older version of Microsoft office with compatibility service packs, and a PDF writer.

I need help with antivirus software. I have some options but a suggestion will be helpful.

    Windows Defender is good enough for most things. And Malwarebytes is great to run whenever you suspect trojans etc.

      No dear. With my past experience and many other's I can't trust Windows defender.

        Then I'd suggest Common Sense, it's a program that helps you avoid clicking links to shady downloads and torrents.

    I like Malwarebytes for the fact that it doesn't get in the way. Some AV programs are almost as bad as a virus themselves with all the popups and warnings they throw at you.

    I also recommend NoScript or equivalent plug-in for your preferred browser. It's not an AV as such, of course, but it will protect you from the vast majority of online threats.

    When I last had one it was avast's free version and it worked well mainly because it didnt hoard resources. My belief is as long as you're knowledgeable about computers and smart about what you're downloading, and can see through the variety of dumb traps to get you to download/click/install shit, antiviruses are superfluous. I haven't used an antivirus in years now, neither has a buddy of mine, and in spite of a ton of torrenting neither of us have had any infections or malware yet.

    Definitely don't pay for an antivirus unless you need or will use the extra features. Also, you might want to copy and paste this question on an actual tech/gaming forum for more specific responses.

    Wouldn't the free download of Microsoft Security Essentials from the Microsoft website get the job done?

      No. I don't trust Windows defender at all. It's not even 50% efficient when compared to most free antivirus.

    I've used AVG Free for years. I have Malwarebytes the free version that I run once in a while. The only difference between the free version and the registered version is the registered version monitors all the time. No problems yet.

    i'd go with AVG and Kespersky, me and my dad use them both and they are really good, haven't had any problems or complaints so far and i've been using it for a few years

    I've never even heard of any of these except Norton, but I guess I'm not computer saavy either. I actually clicked here to see what others might have voted/said! Good luck!! I'm going check back here when others vote :)
