I think most people just dismiss the Beach boys as a typical pop surfer band. Most probably picked Sgt Pepper because they hadn't listened to Pet sounds.
Beatles just have a more "Rocky" image.
Even though Beach Boys did amazingly groundbreaking stuff.
I chose Pet Sounds.
Pet Sounds comes from the heart...while Sgt. Peppers comes from the mind of an LSD user.
I disagree.
Sgt Pepper really sounds dated. It's a great album, but unlike Pet Sounds( Which inspired Sgt pepper), it lacks that excellent production (and even jazz arrangements.)
Both are very good albums. I personally think that Pet sounds broke huge grounds regarding what an album could be. The Beach Boys actually started to work on a more complex album right after Pet Sounds, before Sgt pepper. (SMiLE). SMiLE was to be a concept album far more "out there" than Sgt pepper. Too bad Brian Wilson had that breakdown.
But regarding only Pet sounds and Sgt pepper? I think those two are very equal. But Pet Sounds takes the cake for me.
How can you say Sgt Peppers lack excellent production? Tracks like A Day in the Life and Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds are production masterpieces.
And that's coming from someone who prefers Pet Sounds overall.
And it's a shame about Wilson's breakdown, he could've changed pop music all over again.
No, what I mean was: It is a good album overall.
Good production, great songs etc etc
I just think that Pet Sounds was more "on the spot" when it came to production.
and the fact that Brian Wilson basically made it alone, makes it just the more respectable.
I love Sgt Pepper. That album inspired me to become a producer.
A day in the life is a brilliant track btw.
A real orgasm of sound.
