No but they should. And it shouldn't be let them work. It should be make them work.
I've always been told that they make driver's plates in jail. For the record, I have never seen them working outside of the prison.
Yea they do landscaping along the roads. Just like in Cool Hand Luke. The convicts are even cheaper than illegal alien landscapers. In fact some of the convicts ARE illegal aliens serving time for drug dealing.
Australia:
Community service, is a type of punishment when you've done something not so bad like a little bit of credit card fraud.
Work release, is when inmates can leave Prison to go to work but they have to promise to come straight back.
Same here, pretty much. Work release can mean going back to your old job OR getting a prison job which pays pennies per hour. It just depends on what you got convicted of, security risk and what prison you got sent to. The US prison system is not really a system. Prisons are more like islands unto themselves. They do not all offer the same programs, standards or anything really. But my original question was about jail, very different from prison.
No, but I think prisoners everywhere should be put to work. If we're paying taxes to keep them alive, they're building our houses and keeping our parks clean.
