Where you live, do they let jail inmates work?

Where I live I frequently see jail inmates picking up trash along the road and doing various other jobs. Do they do this where you live?

No but they should. And it shouldn't be let them work. It should be make them work.

    • Can't it be both?

It can be both or just make them. But not just allow them to.

        • They usually have to demonstrate a level of trustworthiness and competence before being let out into the free world, and some are too much of a safety risk. Not every inmate is qualified.

Just lock GPS activated bombs on to them. If they go out of the allowable area, the bomb detonates lowering the prison population by one inmate.

That's why you chain them together.

I've always been told that they make driver's plates in jail. For the record, I have never seen them working outside of the prison.

Yea they do landscaping along the roads. Just like in Cool Hand Luke. The convicts are even cheaper than illegal alien landscapers. In fact some of the convicts ARE illegal aliens serving time for drug dealing.

    Australia:

Community service, is a type of punishment when you've done something not so bad like a little bit of credit card fraud.

Work release, is when inmates can leave Prison to go to work but they have to promise to come straight back.

    • Same here, pretty much. Work release can mean going back to your old job OR getting a prison job which pays pennies per hour. It just depends on what you got convicted of, security risk and what prison you got sent to. The US prison system is not really a system. Prisons are more like islands unto themselves. They do not all offer the same programs, standards or anything really. But my original question was about jail, very different from prison.

Australian GAOLS are different, we don't keep everyone locked up while they are waiting for there court case we let them go, but they have to promise not to commit any more crimes.

No, but I think prisoners everywhere should be put to work. If we're paying taxes to keep them alive, they're building our houses and keeping our parks clean.

You wouldn't want free construction workers building for your company?

Umm no. Private business shouldn't be government funded. That's not how capitalism works.

I almost added that and auto bail outs etc. Let me rephrase, it's not supposed to work like that.

              Comment Hidden ( show )
    • Well, most jail inmates are not convicted yet or are convicted for petty crimes.

I mean prison prisoners. Not jail-house inmates.

        • OK, that's why I specified jail inmates! Prison is a different animal.
