ok so I actually took appart a couple washer and driers for parts to make robots and most of them have drum-shaped cavities, and the flat parts rolling againt the cylindrical drum do not turn relative to the frame
at the interface between those flat parts and the drum, often socks get caught up and fall inside the machine's frame

all the dryers I took aparts were full of socks and cash

i use them to jerk off

the lost sock is normally my boyfriends as us women know how to put 2 socks in a basket, so i just chuck the odd sock in his drawer until the other one shows up! :)

I ask myself the same question. Recently I lost a beloved sock. I was looking in the wash but couldn't find it when I stumbled across a magic portal. So I crawled into the washer and BAM!!! it was a beautiful world full of color and expensive clothes that must have come here to be free. I walked around and found myself in the downtown area. I saw two socks and asked if they had seen my sock. They told me where it was and I went there. I found my sock at a club and my sock was filthy. I decided I had lost my beloved sock forever :(
So all missing socks can be found in my washers magical portal! Why they go there, I don't know.

in my experience of having taken apart, repaired and reassembled a washing machine, i will tell you this much. if the drum is off balance socks and other small items will drop into the space between the drum and the wall of the washer.

I think that when I put my socks in the dryer, some of them somehow find their way through the lint tray and escape out the dryer hose.
but it's weird like, socks always disappear and it's not just like they end up with someone else's laundry, because everybody's socks disappear.. at least at my house.

And why is it always only the left sock? I have a drawer full of right socks I can't wear!

They collect the dust bunnies under the dryer, when you move your dryer, then all you have to do to clean it is pick up all those missing socks.
