Where am i from?

I have been confused about this for probably my entire life.

My parents are from Spain
But I was born and brought up in France (I speak a little French too)
But for the last 7 years I have lived in Austin, United States.

So when people ask me where I am from, and I get asked that a LOT, I never know what answer is the correct one. I want to and enjoy saying France because I most identify with that culture and lifestyle, yet I obviously look more Spanish than French and have some Spanish instincts in me.

And of course I don't want to tell this entire story every time someone asks me where I'm from. So what's the correct answer?

Austin, US 4
France 39
Spain 16
Other 5

Tell them you're Franish, when they ask what it is, then you laugh and tell them you're French, and Spanish. They laugh, you laugh, then boom, friendship, or relationship. Haha.

Born and raised in France would be a fine answer. People ask me all the time where Im from. I act dumb and say "new jersey?" cause theyre expecting me to say China or some shit. If they ask your ethnicity you could say Spanish.

You were born and raised in France; you're FROM France. Or, more technically: from France with Spanish roots. It's not so confusing. *shrugs*

  • You are a Spanish person from France who now lives in America.

Ethnicity and where you are from are different.

    • True but in reality everyone ask where are you from. I dont remember anyone ever used the word ethnicity. Maybe not to sound racist

So your answer should be like this:

    Me: "Where are you from?"

You - simple answer: "I am from France." or "I was born and raised in France."

You - the answer for those who say "But you don't look French": "I was born and raised in France, but my parents were born and raised in Spain and are Spanish."

I think where ever you were born is where you are from.

I've always considered where a person went to high school to be where they are from. I think it is the time when most of a person's personality and mentality are formed. Not much before high school is remembered with the vividness of high school and beyond, for most.
