When you say "asians", what are you referring to

Title says it all. BTW, my use of the term "Mongoloid" is anthropological and not in the offensive context. Also, please note that the inclusion of American Natives is debatable.

Any ethnicity from Asia 28
Anyone in Asia (regardless of origin) 2
East Asians (ex. Chinese, Japanese, Koreans, Filipinos, Vietnamese) 56
South Asians (ex. Indians, Pakistanis) 4
Only Chinese and Japanese 3
Only Chinese 1
Mongoloid race (East Asian, Polynesian, Inuit, American Native) 2
Other 2

  • It depends entirely on who the person is I'm talking to and if I think they will understand me.

Sometimes, I use the term Asian to apply to everyone in Asia. Then again, sometimes I will use it to describe only those residing in East Asia. Most of the time, I try to refer to a specific country.

I don't really get the people who say all of asia. I know it seems counter intuitive, but I just don't think of russians as eurasian.

A lot of East Asians do not consider Filipinos Asian. More like Southeast Asian, or Pacific Islander. That is just my personal experience, guys.

I've noticed there is a big difference between what a British person and an American calls Asian. I don't think I know any British friend who doesn't mean southen-Asian when they say 'Asian'.

But when my American friend with a Chinese orgined family visited England, she had the misfortune to hear some racist idiots shouting abuse about 'Asians'. She thought they meant her, they however were shouting to some Indian boys and were perfectly polite to her.

It depends on the context heavily. If by itself, I would say any of the ethnicities coming from Asia although I usually exclude India as they're a large enough subgroup to warrant specification.

East Asians, or "Orientals" as they were once referred to as. I don't know why not anymore. If that's considered a racist term now, I do apologize.

The Orient means "the East". It is a traditional designation for anything that belongs to the Eastern world or the Near East or Far East, in relation to Europe. So refering to what we think of as Oriental Japanese, Chinese, Korean and so on is wrong. I think it became offensive in the same way that negro became offensive. People decided they didn't like it anymore. I guess because it was often used in a negative tone by racists.

My understanding is that it's considered offensive now, yeah. Rugs are oriental, people are Asian. I think it's a euphemism treadmill situation. :-/ As long as people are assholes, though, euphemism treadmills will happen.

      • It's only offensive in North America and Australia. All other places use it as a neutral term to refer to East Asians. Even the English Speaking East Asians in Asia use it all the time.
I was actually surprised when I heard it was offensive, because my relatives from South East Asia use it all the time.

Well if I'm referring to Chinese, Koreans and the Japanese for example I would classify them as "Asian". The term "South Asian" is used when I refer to Indians, Pakistani and Bangladeshi people.
