When work pisses me off...

My job really pisses me off sometimes, crazy right?

Anyway, on really bad days I flip customers off from behind the counter.

With the way the counter is set up, noone can see what I'm doing, so it's not like I'm being a TOTAL asshole.

I work for tips, so it helps to be friendly, and I always try to keep a smile on my face, but it's tough to fake it sometimes.

It actually lifts my spirits. I just think it's really funny to have a nice conversation with someone who doesn't know they're getting the middle finger from the person they're talking to.

It's probably immature, but I've gotten way more tips since I started doing it and people have commented on how nice and friendly I am while taking their orders and stuff. It's even improved my feelings towards work, so I'm not about to stop any time soon.

So, is that normal? Does anyone else do that or something like it?

  • I just bitch it out with my coworkers. It makes me feel loads better and we always end up laughing in the end!

I try to be too sugary nice to people when they are being ridiculous, so when I am syrupy sweet and they are cantankerous and mean, the difference is highly noticeable and it makes me feel good that I made them look like even more of an asshole while being kind of an asshole.

haha if you flipping people off is secretive, I dont see a huge problem with it.

I'm not impressed. I would be impressed if you somehow managed to flip them off in plain site without getting caught, or even if you did get caught, finding a way to convince them you didn't actually flip them off.

    • Well....
I wear glasses, and have been known to occasionally adjust them with my middle finger. More so when I'm pissed off than not.
xD But it's not a competition, it's just something to get me through the workday.

No I think that is two faced and disrespectful. Just because they can't see it doesnt make it any more respectful, in fact in a strange way its more disrespectful that you're secretly disrespectful and not upfront, but getting tips from the very person you are deceiving with kindness.

    • Oh, it's the very definition of two faced. But I think it's better than copping an attitude or acting surly to the customers.

My problems are not theirs, and when I'm at work my main thought is to get through the day without incident. Acting on my frustrations in a more honest way while at work would only serve to upset the customers and probably get me written up or fired.

I can't stop "bad days" from happening, but I can allow myself to vent in a way that doesn't hurt anyone and brings my spirits up as well.

I know it's not the right thing to do, but I'm not looking for validation. I just wanted to know if I was alone in this practice.

There are better ways to vent than this.

        • I don't doubt there are.
Would you mind sharing a few?

It really helps hey! I've kinda 'mentally' done it, when people can see my hands. It makes it easier to fake being friendly, when you're really cursing them in your head!!

    • lol I know! It's crazy how much it helps. Inconspicuously venting your frustrations and smiling in their face while you do it.
Now I wonder how many people do it to me when I go somewhere xD
