When a movie says "based on a true story", is it really?

I ask because I watched The Conjuring and it said "Based on a true story". Does that mean all that crap really happened to that family? Did some entity really grab that girl by her hair and yank her around the room?

When movies say "Based on a true story" what does that mean? If it's a "true story" why not just say "true story". Because "Based on a" means just the premise is real. So how much of the story is real?

It's usually very loosely based on a detail or two of the original story.

Movies which say "based on a true story" are inspired by a true story but dont actually copy every single word. those movies are just INSPIRED by those stories. So have you ever watched "Loose Change"? This is not just inspired by a true story, it actually is a true story. Research the NWO

Long ago I watched a movie called haunting in Connecticut.
I think it's not true at all. I met an old man from Connecticut who told me that there was a boy who fell sick and people doubt that it was some ghost who made him sick. So the movie is based on that story and everything else in the movie is fiction.

There are some movies that state "based on a true story", but are lies. Some movies that also state that are based on stories but they add scenes, scenarios, or characters to spice up the movie. You sometimes have to research to really get the truth.

Well "based on" a true story doesn't mean much, does it? If a story has even the tiniest grain of truth you could claim that.
