I had a homophobic friend in high school. She explained that she just didn't understand it so she didn't like it.
A few years later, I find out she is bisexual and has a gf. That was a shocker. Homophobics really just misunderstand homosexuality.

Some people are taught against it which they hold with them as the grow so they automatically think it's bad or even a 'sin'.

I don't mind people who dislike homosexuals, but I won't sit here and agree with their way of thinking. They have their reasons, and I respect that, but I also have my reasons.

some people are also homophobic because from childhood sexual abuse, like being sexually abused by another man

This is a reason for which someone may be homophobic but it's not the only reason. Some people are taught to be homophobic by fundamentalist religious people (Westboro Baptist Church). They could have been taught to be homophobic by their parents or community. They could have been hitten on and then reacted with hate.

These are reasons for being homophobic but they are not justifications. It is wrong to be homophobic (or prejudice in any other ways) but the people who are homophobic generally didn't chose that either but were made that way by their society.

Also please do not attack me for defending homophobes (NB: I'm defending homophobes not homophobia nor homophobic actions) as I am bisexual and have experienced homophobic bullying myself and it's horrible.

'closet homosexuals'-now, would they actually BE homophobic, or do they just ACT homophobic as a form of cloaking their true identity? I mean, people do this kind of thing all the time, they outwardly act a certain way to distract others from the truth of what they're all about. But they're not TRULY what they act as, it's just a facade. I don't know that I'd call those people homophobic since they probably don't truly believe what they profess to.

Yes, some are actually homophobic in that they completely deny their own sexuality and supress it completely. But those that are merely hiding it from others yet know and accept that they are gay, I don't think they are actual homophobes.

Not true. some are homophobic because of childhood sexual abuse. I knew someone who was homophobic because he was raped by a man when he was a little boy

      • Darkoil

He get's raped by one man and suddenly when he grows up he hates all gay people, does he think all gay people abuse children?, trying to blame a group of complete strangers for what happened to him isn't right. Plus sexually orientation isn't a major issue for a lot of child abusers so the guy that raped him might not have even been gay.

All modern humans are descended from a group of a few hundred humans who were the only ones to survive the eruption of a super volcano about 74 thousand years ago. Therefore no one is an unevolved monkey. However Homophobes do awful things and there's a reason homophobia's illegal in the UK.

Actually the most recent common ancestor of every person on the planet is mitochondrial eve and it's believed she was alive roughly 200,000 years ago. Thanks for clarifying that for me though, i honestly thought there were unevolved monkeys posing as humans in our society instead of using it as a metaphor saying that their beliefs don't have a place in a contemporary, civilised society. :-P

It's always wrong to prejudge, even if you know someone has a bad trait e.g. homophobia it's not a reason to hate them, just to disagree with them and try to change their point of view. I'm bi but I'm certainly not a homophobophobe (someone who has a fear of people who have a fear of homosexuals).

Oh trust me, homophobic no why they are homophobic. My grandparents are. , and they're obviously old enough to under what gay is. My Grandmom thinks its disgusting. My uncle (her brother) is gay. He hasn't told anyone he's gay but, he's lived with a man for years and they hold hands and say I love you. She has since then stopped speaking to her own blood because she found out he was gay. My grandfather thinks that every gay male should be put down and beat brutally . I find gay people to be perfectly fine, but it really pisses me off that they are so anti gay.

Billions of people? I strongly doubt that. I do agree that it is your personal opinion, and that's fine. Everyone is entitled to their opinions. My problem is when people tell Gays that they can't get married and have equal rights as straight people.

People who are against Gay marriage are anti-American. We are supposed to be a country where everyone no matter what their religion, race, sexual orientation, etc have equal rights, that's why there is laws that separate Church and State. Which is why Bigoted religious special interest groups should keep their opinions to their selves when it comes to topics such as Gay rights and Marriage.

Whomever people decide to love and spend the rest of their lives with, and what they do behind closed doors is no ones else s business.

i accept what youre saying however what i say is true. it is billions of people. so far only westernised countries have accepted homosexuality almost fully. the rest of the world has not as yet and i doubt they will since most other countries are in fact run by religion and controlled by tradition. i agree that it is nobodies business what people decide to do and that there is no way to change peoples minds which i would never try to do. i dont care if someone is homosexual. i have a close friend who is one. it is really hard to explain why i dont agree with it. when i see two girls or two guys together and theyre kissing and holding each other to me it just looks wrong. now if they want to get married then fine. i dont really care about that because how does it affect me? the main thing i dont agree with is christian gay or gays from any other religion who are against homosexuals, claim to still believe in that religion and try to study it and wish to get married in a church. THAT is wrong. you can get married just about anywhere these days so why try to do it in a church in the eyes of a god who people are taught to believe doesnt agree with their lifestyle choices?
and while america is meant to be like that, please dont kid yourself because we know that it isnt. people arent treated equally and thats the same here in australia. i understand americas views on muslims and believe me i share some of them, however i dont believe they are all bad. one of my best friends is a muslim and he is very genuine. in australia it is racism and prejudice mostly against indians and asians, and for a while it was against europeans like me. in america it still happens to. there is so much racsim and blood shed there too. the only thing is, peopple seem to be caring more about equal rights for gays than they do in trying to fix the rest of the problem in our countries.

Marriage was originally a contract between two tribes, two countries, or wealthy land owners, kings, etc to expand on their land and wealth, love was not even part of the equation, Woman were considered bargaining chips and nothing more. In some countries Marriage is still this way, especially in Muslim dominated countries.

Technically the aspect of marriage was not even of Christian origin. In fact Marriage was considered a sin at one point, they viewed putting someone else up on a pedestal over God was a sin and punishable by death. To lust for a woman, or even to have sex without the intent to procreate was just as bad or even worse than killing someone. Some religions today still believe this way, even some of the Christian sects in the U.S.A practice this. (Some Mormons sects for example)

As for Gays, Christians were not always against Gays. Pope Julius the III was blatantly Gay and even married another man. During his time is was socially exceptable to be Gay or Bi.It wasn't until the the Puritan movement in Europe that sparked the whole anti-gay movement. So technically having a Gay marriage in a Christian Church is completely O.K. since it is the true tradition and part of the History of the Christian religion in general.

And I look at it this way, If God is all about love then why would he condemn someone for loving someone of the same sex? So let me get this straight, love unconditionally unless it is of the same sex. That does not sound like a true loving God to me.

In America we have Woman support groups for Women who got out of a controlling and abusive relationship with their Muslim Husbands. Your friend is a Male Muslim, so of course he sounds genuine. Ask him about Womans rights and I bet he will tell you that Women are supposed to be subordinate to their Husbands, ware veils, and have no rights other than to bare children. Every Muslim Man I have met believe that, and I have talked to alot of them.

If you think Muslims are so great, Muslims STONE their Wives for adultery, and even stone their children for being with someone of a different religion. Google it, there is a plethora of articles on the subject.

As for racism, that will never change. No matter how much Multiculturalism you try to push down every ones throats , the instinct to preserve their heritage, race, etc will always prevail. Even the most Liberal, pro-Multiculturalism activist in the world would die inside if their White daughter or Son Married a Black, regardless of what they say and how they act.You can't " propaganda" people out of millions of years of Evolutionary instinct.

Everyone can choose to believe what they want. A lot of people think being gay is a sin, since it is taught at church and so. If they want to be that way, fine by me. It's a free country. I don't agree with it though, because like I said, it's a free country and if people want to date someone of the same sex I believe they should be allowed to do that without being discriminated against.

But I guess people will always be hateful towards others for whatever reason. That's just humanity.

People shold not be free to do whatever they want!

People should not be alowed to do things which actively compromise the quality of life of others (e.g. theft, rape, murder). Homophobia KILLS PEOPLE, and thus should be illegal as should any type of prejudice.

People will always find someway to single out other people and hate them, the world will never be without prejudice. I'm just being realistic here.

Look, it's great that you feel so strongly about this, really it is. But I have two points to make. Point number one, most homophobic people never harm anyone because of being gay. VERY few people actually do. Point number two, no matter how hard we try to stop prejudice, it will ALWAYS be there. No matter what.

Sorry, but knowing that there are people who condemn and see me as inferior for what I am ad cannot control harms me. Humans have evolved to care about how others think about them. Just because prejudice is natural and will always occur doesn't mean we shouldn't do all we can to minimise it and it certainly doesn't mean we should tolerate it.

People are alowed to be whatever they want apart from when it starts to harm other people. For example I could say "I want to be a rapist" doesn't mean I should be alowed to. Homophobic people make life much worse for homosexuals and have driven some to suicide; homophobia is not acceptable behaviour and should not be treated as such.

Homosexuality has been openly acceptable for thousands of years until Catholicism, and other main stream religions came into the picture.

Religion is why Homosexuality is shunned in society today, people just can't let loose of their Bronze Age religions and think for themselves.

Having a Lesbian Sister I know for a fact that Homosexuality is not taught, or due to environmental factors. She was never sexual abused, and if anything she was a pampered spoiled brat growing up.

Now she is an adult and married to another Woman, she decided to have artificial insemination to have a child, and ended up with twins. Both her children are straight as an arrow even though their parents are Lesbians.

I personally have nothing against Gays, and I support Gay Marriage.

Gay people are just gay literally so let them be gay, can't say that i personally agree with the concept of it, but people do what they want, and besides gay people don't make babies, so that's a population control.
