What you guys think about following your dreams?

I've been living a boring, monotonous life right now, and I always dreamed about being a writer. I don't want to do for profit, but I want to share my stories with the world.
I've been thinking about leaving it all behind and giving up of my near future (high school degree, university, work, etc) to live low on money, only riding a bike or asking for free rides in the roads, to visit another cities and meet new people, new adventures, new stories, a whole new world. Because, you know, we only live once.
What you guys think? Would you do the same, or would you keep with the monotonous life and not appreciate the beauty of this world?

I would leave it all behind and follow my heart to decide what's best 10
I would never follow my dreams. This seems foolish and impossible 3
I'm thinking about this, but I think it's too risky. 16
I'm thinking about this and I think it's worth the risk 8
Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

Yes, you can follow your dreams, but graduate high school first and certainly go to college if you can! If you're so keen on following your dreams then do the things that will help you to do so! I hope you're at least making good grades in English and ideally taking creative writing or journalism as electives! Whatever you do don't be a douchebag lazy bones about it and drop out of school just because you can. I have my high school diploma, but sadly I did drop out of college for an idiotic and cliché reason; I regret that bad decision to this day!

There are many parts of the world where even a basic education is near unobtainable, and a college education is becoming increasingly more expensive, at least in the United States, so try to not be so impatient to start your romantic starving artist career as a writer. Seize and appreciate every educational opportunity you get, and you will have a better chance at realizing your goals. Also you might want to learn how to wait tables, you gotta be able to feed yourself while you're chasing your dream. If you simply cannot wait then start a blog, but whatever you do don't cut your education short, don't lead with your pride and ego. Best of luck to you!
    :-)

Why am I going to spend my time on something that won't give any return in the future? I know that I need to learn English to speak with almost everyone in this world, but like I said, I don't want to do for profit, I just want to share my stories. I'm not afraid to commit mistakes while writing. I don't want to be stuck in the office, sitting in front of a computer for 8 hours per day. Sorry if I misread your comment, but I understood that you think I'm one of thoso who want to be famous with writing.
Actually I'll admit I wrote in the wrong way, and even missed a few informations. It's not just about writing, I also want to play sax through the streets.
I'm not afraid of abandoning all and failing miserably. Quoting again: "We only live once."
What have you done you regret so much? Aren't you pride that you broke the walls and tried to live against the rules of the world? When you die, you'll think about it was better living like a machine, instead of living with freedom?

I've been stuck in high school for 5 years. I'm 19 years old by now, and it's not because I'm lazy and don't want to study, I do this everyday for nearly 6 hours without rest after enduring the whole morning on school.
They're so exigent with the high grades it's hard to achieve what they want.
And I ask you, if I fail, what's the worst thing that can happen to me? Just because I failed, I'll die instantly? If this happens, I can always go back to the point where I started. There's not age limit to study again in the high school.

Hmm... well, I dunno where you live, but if you're in the United States you could take your GED. I do appreciate your transparency. If it's any consolation I had to repeat my senior year, because I had to switch schools.

I live in Brazil where a person's abilities and talents means nothing. And there's no such thing as GED or something similar here.
I've repeat two times in school, one in the first year, another in the second. If this didn't happened, I was supposed to be in university by now. You're way better than I am, and I hope you graduate soon and be happy the way you want to be. ^-^

I think we only hear about the people that followed their dreams and succeeded. The countless others that failed probably wished they had some qualifications to fall back on...
I don't think it has to be a choice. Get an education, then you'll have more freedom to really do what you want.

I know you don't want to be famous or rich, but you have to be able to make a living to survive. It's worth investing a few years to know that if you can't survive just from writing, you'll be able to support yourself in other ways that don't have to suck so badly.

Did you ever asked yourself, why they failed in following their dreams?
Most of those who wanted to follow their dreams and failed gace up at the first time they slipped and dropped on the ground. Instead of rising and keep insisting at all costs, they simply kept on the ground, being stepped on, being crushed by the others whose don't even deserve to have sucess.
I don't care if others want to destroy me. And if I failed, when I die, I'll rest in peace (no pun intended) because I'll have the possibility to say that I tried and lived at my best, by not being stucked in the same place, without having the chance of meeting new people and learned new cultures and stories.

I did follow my dreams. It was hard. I tasted failure many times, but ultimately I succeeded. And, it was wonderful.

I am not hearing something important in your expectations. Life is a journey. Your dreams are the destination. You will never get there from where you are now on your inspiration alone. You must be prepared with skills to make money in the short run, like waiting on tables. You must find ways to quickly acquire special skills that will be demanded as you move closer to your dreams. You will need good health, good motivation, good ability to save money, and social skills to fit in with small groups.

Idealism is not an option, you must outfit yourself for the expedition. Consider study in a foreign country. Academics in South America over-emphasize the classics. And, start a blog; have a plan; don't sit still. Every day counts. Good luck.

My self steem is way better than a few years ago and I think this will help me a lot on my way to follow my dreams.

I'm exactly in the same position. I live in Australia, and I'm halfway through my second last year of highschool. While I'm determined to graduate from highschool, I'm still unsure about Univeristy/college. This is mainly cause of economic factors. I know you can like pay it off later, but I also don't want to live my life with debts, because that's what my parents have done all their life and it's clearly restricting. That, and I'm not sure if the extra education will be worth the time and money. I also want to move to London, permanently, when I finish school, but there is also the cost with that as well. I ALSO want to be a writer. I want to publish books, have other people read my work. And, well, being paid to do what I love would be an extra bonus. But, if it is worth the risk, if you believe you could do it, go for it. I'm 110% all for dreams and going after them.

Actually, I don't want to be just a writer but also an artist. I love writing as same as drawing too.
My dream it's to write books and do their art the way I see, because I don't think It would be possible to translate the images in my head to a hired artist.

In my opinion, there's no need of finishing high school (at least in my country the education is poor, inconsistent and overall awful), and to be both, it's not necessary to have a bunch of degrees to prove that you know how to write and drawn. And I don't want to do for money or anything like that.
My mother always said it's good to have your own house, if anything goes wrong, at least you have a place to come back, however, she always forget that even if you have a place for you, how you're going to sustain the debts if you lost everything. If this happens to me, I prefer to live in the streets, walking endlessly and meeting new people even if they don't want to.

Now, about moving to London, I guess it's good if you search those apartments that people search for a new roommate to help paying the bills, each one paying half (I don't know how they're called. I only saw on tv shows and I know only a few of informations about this, lol).
Just a little advice: if you want to be a writer, ask help for the teachers when writing something, and read, at least, 2 books per month, doesn't matter the genre. This will open more your mind and boost your creativity and grammar.

      (Sorry if went too far...)

My dream is for modern day America to wake up and see what is happening to it.

My dream is for the silent majority to stop being fucking silent about what is going on and for the ones that do see it to wake up and fucking say something about it.

My dream doesn't include some fucking stupid idealistic multicultural "utopia" that will never exist no matter how many social agenda legislations are created and forced down people's throats.

My dream is to stop seeing illegal immigrants protesting that they deserve more "rights" in a land and country they don't belong in and broke the LAW to get into.

keep your dreams alive. dont let people say its not important. americans lost the dream. DREAM you have to have dreams to have any success in anything. americans are just to lazy to be successful so they want $15 a hour for a beginner job.
i suggest you work and write at the same time.
