What would you think if you saw a young person with shaky hands?

I'm in my early 20s and I have essential tremor - basically my hands are shaky whenever I'm using them, and other parts of body sometimes twitch (wrists, fingers, neck).

I know that some people notice this and assume I'm nervous even when I'm not. They basically tell me to calm down, which is kind of annoying but I just laugh it off.

I work in a cafe which is very busy around this time, but I don't get nervous, I actually enjoy it, but when I carry people's stuff to them like cups and plates my hands are shaky (not bad enough to spill things, but noticeable)

What would you think?

They are nervous - I would say something to help them calm down 5
They are nervous - I wouldn't say anything 19
They are on drugs 5
They are sick 7
I would know they have a tremor disorder - no big deal 17
Wouldn't care/notice 12
Other 7
Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

I have a friend who has shaky hands. At first I thought it was because she was nervous, but I figured it was a tremor later on as it happens constantly. I figured it on my own, however.
Now I wouldn't think twice about it with anyone.

I used to know a guy with shaky hands in high school. His hands shook because of the medication he took for his bipolar disorder. I wondered why he shook before he told me but I didn't think much of it. In fact, he was a very good friend of mine. :)

Lol @ the majority voting for "I would know they have a tremor disorder - no big deal." Really you would KNOW? Haha. Either those voters are lying to themselves or just placating to make you feel better. I'm so not a fan of placating. Those who voted they wouldnt care or notice are much better.

Personally if I looked at someome's shaking hands I would of course not readily assume it was a tremor disorder. That's equally as ignorant as assuming "they're nervous." I would glance at their facial expression and body language. Are they acting nervous too? Or are they totally cool and calm excluding the shaking hands? How are they reacting to the fact that their hands are shaking? You learn the answer to these Q's within seconds, and that would determine what I think about the situation. You want people to not think you're nervous? Don't give a shit what they think. I used to have resting tremor in my hands when doing delicate/precise work and people never called me nervous, but they wondered if I had too much caffeine. Why? Cause I was least bothered about my hands. And that appeared as confidence which clashed with their "He is nervous" theory.

Truth be told the general public WILL think you are nervous. Because people are people, generally ignorant. What you should do, besides not giving a shit, is try not to consider jokes to always be condescending. Some people might just be trying to lighten up the situation. Maybe learn to joke about it yourself! "Nah I don't need calming. My hands have a mind of their own and do their own thing. So if I end up slapping you remember it wasnt me." ;)

Would probably think they were trying to suppress a tick, wouldn't care and I wouldn't give it a second thought

      Unrelated to post...

I'm listening to Neutral Milk Hotel as I drive...sit in the car while someone else drives.

I came across your name so I thought I'd say hello.

      Hello :)

I also have hands that tremor constantly. I always have. But I don't have any underlying medical reason for it. I've always just assumed that it's simply something that some people have that they don't really have much control over. Like how some people have blue eyes, or a birthmark. I've met plenty of other people my age with shaky hands who don't really know the reason as to why they can't be still.

I would notice it as a fleeting thought and not think much of it. I wouldn't assume anything because it could literally be anything. A lot of things can make a person shakey, only a prick would assume the worse.

  • I have tremors too. Its not a big deal. I started geting them around 15. I take meds to which make them worse, but they are still there a bit if i do not take meds. Its a pretty common neurological symptom.

    • Yeah, it's just annoying/embarrassing because I'm quiet, so people automatically think I'm nervous all the time, and they joke about it saying things like "calm down I won't hurt you" and it just feels a bit condescending.
Plus sometimes I do spill things or press the wrong buttons when my wrist/fingers twitch.

      • I can understand that is annoying. People rarely say anything to me about it.

Honestly, I would think you had some weird disease that caused tremors. I don't think I would guess nerves. Just a miswired brain.

OMG I HAVE THE SAME THING!! Even when i'm by myself my hands will shake. I can't fucking paint my nails or sow or anything like that lol.But i do notice that my hands and feet get cold fast, so i think it has to do with blood circulation and not having your hands and feet get enough.

    • Yeah, my hands and feet are always freezing too even when it's hot out. I didn't know if it had something to do with the tremors
