What would you do if you won 2 million dollars?

I live in an impoverished town in NY. Over the years, I've seen coworkers, cousins, friends, acquaintances, and other people get their hands on large sums of money due to inheriting it, winning a lottery, or winning a lawsuit. It always winds up the same for every single one of them: they quit their jobs, they go on crazy spending sprees, run out of money, panic, and beg everyone for a place to stay. Some of them wound up with huge debt, foreclosures on the properties they bought, or they were suckers who let other people use them. Once the money was gone, the people that used them would leave too.

This drives me nuts! I'm not a materialistic person, so I guess I really don't understand why they'd piss it all away on multiple large properties, cars, jewelry, expensive clothes, and tech. I also don't understand why people who were broke all their lives would squander such a rare opportunity to get out of their living situation.

If it were me, I'd keep my mouth shut about getting cash, buy a small house far away from this garbage town, and live peacefully. I'd invest some of the money into my retirement account, but also have some in my bank account just in case something goes wrong. I'd still work, because idk, I'd just feel empty if I didn't have a place to go to everyday.

What would you do if you had a lot of money?

Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

I know exactly what I would do if I suddenly won two million dollars! I would keep it a secret! I like the idea of finding ways to make passive income. I believe I would be quite conservative in my investments, because in all truth two million dollars isn't that much money, especially after taxes. I don't think anyone needs to know about my finances. Whether I'm rich, or poor I don't think most people need to know anything about my money situation. I think knowledge of my finances should be on a need to know basis.

Absolutely agree. I was raised that finances are totally private, and to ask anyone about theirs, or openly discuss your own, is very rude and inappropriate. I appreciate that people have different views on the subject but I stand by this way of thinking and it's done me well.

Obviously we can sit and speculate that Mr Smith at number 12 must be loaded, or that Jenny from the office must have lost a lot during the divorce, but those conversations are to be had privately behind closed doors. You have no right to ask and they have no business to tell you.

A spare million dollars is a good thing. So is diversification. I would open an online account at Fidelity.com and scale into an S&P500 ETF. Then, I would open a small book store in rural Nova Scotia with good coffee and a couple of plush lounge chairs. Hopefully, there would be relatively few customers to interrupt my solitude and comfort.

Well I'd feel guilty if I didn't use some of it for a big family holiday (and when I say big, I don't mean extravagant, I just mean that my whole family will be there). And I'd probably give each of them about twenty grand each. Other than that I'd just buy a small flat in the city and retire, spending the rest of my life on my many hobbies. I'd invest my money so that I wouldn't have to worry about running out in the future. There isn't really anything expensive that I'd want to spend it on, nothing that would cost more than a few grand anyway. So yeah, I don't want money so that I could live an extravagant lifestyle at all, I'd want it just so that I wouldn't have to waste half my life doing work that I hate.

I think I would do the same thing as you if I won money, except one thing. I would give some cash to my mom and cousins so one can move away from her abusive brother and the other to put into her business. Everyone else can fuck off while I’ll be sipping tea in a little house I bought in the forest.

Put the lot in the bank and live off the interest.

Put a bunch away for my daughter. Pay off my house and get a Raptor. Cause I think they're badass. Then help as many worthy causes as I could. Not very materialistic so I would use it to help people.

Put some into retirement...buy a house...spend the rest of family, friends and charities that actually do good.

A reality is that the vast majority of people who win the lottery, Publishers Clearing House (one of the major prizes), etc. end up bankrupt within 5 years because they have never developed the discipline to properly manage money and how it affects their life.

I do enter Publishers Clearing House, and my wife and I have plans on what to do with the money should we win (and for the various prizes - which range from $10,000 - $10,000,000 instant win; or $500 - $10,000 per week for the rest of our lives; or a combination of per week with an instant cash prize: most often currently advertised is $5000 per week).

Paying off house and household renovations, savings, investments, quitting work, charitable giving, etc. are all options depending on the amount of $. If we win the $10 Million we've pretty well decided we would give half ow what remained after taxes to charity. Taxes will eat up 35-48% the value of any major prize after subtracting what we don't give to charity, depending on how much we win at once.

While there would be a few new things (my car is 12 years old and a replacement would be in the works); we don't have visions of extravagant spending - and plan to make the money earn interest and live off of that if we can.

I’d give at least half to a worthy charity, like St. Jude Children’s Hospital. Then I’d do the mundane stuff , like pay off my house and invest.

First thing I would do would be the same as you, get a decent house far away from my town. It’s not a bad area I just want an excuse to cut certain people off.

Then get a car and call some professional advisor to help me figure out what to do with the rest. I would only tell my closest friends about it and even then not the exact amount, I’m not rich but I lie about my bank balance anyway so people won’t try to take advantage of me.

The only “crazy” thing I would do is get a pool for my house and start actually going to the festivals I watch on YouTube.

Nice choice bro. Paid hobbies are the best. Y'alls can grind valves for the local auto parts stores. As for the Elvis impersonator, wouldn't it be more fun to do that yourself? Audition at the local waterin hole, and tell the owner no money required. You're in for the free drinks.

  • Save it all! Try to invest it to make even more. Use some to pay the bills. Buy a small piece of land.

I would for one put half of it in my savings account and I'll most likely spend some of it to go on holidays.

Poor people stay poor their whole lives because they have no concept of financial responsibility or hard work. If I won that much money, I would put it in a savings account and continue with my degree/career path, then when I have a good job and a steady income which allows for it, I would start the partying, drugs and massive spending sprees
