What would you do if you found out your bf/gf was cutting?

Say you are in a relationship and you come across either new cuts or scars and you find out your loved one has been cutting themselves. What would you do?

I would stand by them and try to help 105
I would leave that crazy mo fo 10
I would stick with them but warn them never to do it again 22
Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

I would ask why, how the cutting helps, and I would tell them the physical and psychological risks of cutting. I would express how much I care and understand, but also how upset I was about it and why.

I would NEVER say "if you do it again, I'm leaving you." This just adds more pressure and can cause them to do it more.

Bullshit, that's exactly what they want you to do. Cutting is a pathetic cry for attention. If they don't get any attention from it, they'll stop.

I guess you'd know this because you've been a self harmer?

Don't talk about things you don't understand. I've known people who have done this, and have done it myself in the past (years ago), and in none of these cases was the cutting visible or a topic of discussion that was brought up on purpose. If anything, I'm did and am doing what I can to hide the scars I have because I'm ashamed of them. Even some of my closest friends were not aware of them because I didn't talk about it.

      • it aint always like that tho some people need it they see it as a way to be the one that deals out the most pain to themselves in there life instead of letting other people hurt them more than they can themselves!

I'd throw the razor in the bin, grab their hand, tell them I love them and give them the biggest hug and ruffle her hair, and then I'd tell the parents

Well, this is a psychiatric disorder that I do not understand, and being in a relationship with someone with mental problem is about the least sexy and/or attractive thing I can think of!

I wouldn't leave in his/her time of greatest need - I'm not an asshole. I'd recognize that there have been times when I needed help, and that I should stick with it and help him/her out despite the fact that it would be more "convenient" to leave. If you're in a position to help someone in meaningful way, you do it.

  • People almost never cut for attention. Its usually comes from a horrible past experience. Usually abuse from someone they look up to or being abandoned young. but yeah there is a chance that they are doing it for attention. So be careful it could be real or fake. And no it doesnt make it harder unless your friends and family freak and make you go to therapy and get medicated, that makes it worse if they just calm down and not get others involved it would go smoothly and be alot easier.

i honestly do not see the point in cutting yourself . if you honestly ask me if you cut yourself doesn't that just make things harder for the person that's doing it to themselves ? i mean if you are / were cutting yourself weren't you doing it for a reason i mean you don't just wake up and say alright i am in a good mood today so i am going to go into the bathroom and cut myself . like uhm no . who does that . i have 2 friends that did this when they were younger and it made things a whole lot harder for themselves and for others around them . so if you know anybody help them and please never leave them just for doing that !

Firstly, I'd ask them why they're cutting themselves. Family problems? Psychological problems? I would definitely help them, regardless.

I would buy them a set of cutting knives as a present, but I would have infected the knives with hepatitis or aids first! That way they will get diseased from there cutting and when they found it is was me we would all have a good laugh!
