It depends on why the draft was reinstated. Generally I am a pacifist and do not agree with fighting but if it was to defend something I felt strongly about, they wouldn't need to draft me. However the current state of things do not warrant such an effort on my part.

  • Me, I've always fancied Quebec, Labrador too. I guess being drafted would be a good excuse for an unannounced vacation.

If the government wants a war, they are welcome to track me down, and we can have ourselves a little war. I'll be damned if I'm going to sacrifice my life because of human greed and ignorance, which is the cause of ALL war.

What if civil war broke out over the right to have access to clean water? Wars don't often give people a choice in the matter. As an American, I never take for granted how lucky I am that I don't have to live with war in my back yard.

You don't like it: What are you doing about it?

      • I live in North America. There is clean water everywhere.

If my home "heats up", I will just go somewhere else. I am on nobody's side but my own. I have no friends or family, nobody to tie me down; I'd just move on and let the little ants fight with each other.

It wouldn't really affect me. I'm out of shape and on disability for some pretty serious psychiatric conditions. I would have to give sexual favors to get INTO the military, not out of it.

Even if they took me in, I'd just peel potatoes or something.

If I were actually fit for service, I would just hope to get lucky, and deal with it if I didn't.

Nothing, I think. I am 61 years old now, and even if they did re-instate the draft I doubt they would want to draft an old codger of my age and bad health (I have a pacemaker). Plus, when I was a young man my status was 4F, so they probably would not want me in the military anyhow. I once got so mad at my mom that I conidered trying to get my status changed, so I could go in the miltary just to spite her. But luckily I never did.

  • Mr-Time

If my country was being invaded or a direct threat to my nation was presented then yes i would go. Because it is our duty to protect the country that raised and helped us. Furthermore i think that the draft should be gender-neutral. I live in Australia and just recently we have removed all gender-based restrictions on military service. Fighting a war like Vietnam is stupid but it is the resposibility of everyoe to protect their country.

I'd invoke a medical deferment because I have asthma and I never outgrew it. How come invoking Conscientous Objector status wasn't a choice? I would certainly invoke that if I didn't have any sort of medical exemptions! (And I would encourage others to invoke Conscientous Objector status if they wern't medically exempt.)

I'm a girl. And a pacifist. So either my gender or "religious" beliefs would keep me from being drafted, although the people I'd lose would be devastating. War is unfortunate consequence brought on by people's stupidity.

  • MaskedGunman:

How could God rule for us? He may exist but all his wishes are open to interpretation. His words have been used to inspire some of the greatest and some of the most horrible events in human history.

    "Without God we fail"

You're right in a way. To me God is an idea that's conscious of it's (his) own reality. In the ultimate sense God is Knowledge made aware but it sounds pretentious to sum him up with one word like that.

So yes if we have Knowledge (ie God) then we can overcome our primal instincts and elevate ourselves to something nearly divine as our Creator.

    "Rome sucks"

Why don't you like Rome? Did you know that by 300AD the Roman Legions were made up mostly of the "foreigners" they conquered? That two of the emperors were African and Iberian?

Rome wasn't a city named Rome. It was an idea and through that idea Thracians, Guals, Numantians were united irrevocably into the Roman ideal.

It's a crucial message that speaks to acceptance, brotherhood and even redemption and that none of us are separated by anything except our own ideas. That all men are capable of living in harmony with one another.

    • Rome was an empire of filth and murder, which condoned and even normalized the molestation of children and the enforcement of combat upon slaves for amusement. They brutally murdered thousands of foreign peoples for sheer conquest (at least the U.S. makes up some excuse when they do it.) Rome is responsible for the corruption of Christianity, incorporating into it pagan ideas, and the acceptance of involvement in political affairs, nationalism, and even warfare, which has resulted in the array of millions of confused people today venerating idols, deifying Mary and the apostles, fearing Hell, and slaughtering each other, who all claim to be "Christians".

My ancestors, the Gauls and the Visigoths, laid ruin to Rome. If I were not so anti-violence, I would wish I had been there to help do it.

Many people today are of the opinion that religion inspires atrocious events. It does. Religion has proven to be the most destructive force in human history. Christianity in particular. It is a fullfillment of Bible prophecy: "However, there also came to be false prophets among the people, as there will also be false teachers among YOU. These very ones will quietly bring in destructive sects and will disown even the owner that bought them, bringing speedy destruction upon themselves.  Furthermore, many will follow their acts of loose conduct, and on account of these the way of the truth will be spoken of abusively." (2Peter 2:1-3)

      • "Rome was an empire of filth and murder"

O_o but tell me how you really feel.

        "Normalized the molestation of children"

That's true but what you fail to mention is that it was common throughout the ancient world. In ancient Judea women were married off at 12 or 11 so to say Rome was responsible for this is like saying that Portugal was responsible for the terrible practice of slavery just because they perpetuated that idea.

Rome's only crime was that they did not take a stand against that practice but instead embraced it as the rest of the world did.

"I almost wish I had been there to sack Rome"

In the vacuum of Rome's fall, where there was no centralised authority to protect the people, extremism and man's own selfish nature ruled in it's place. It was the Dark Ages.

Are you sure you want to be counted among those responsible for chaining man to the terrors of that horrible period of time?

        "Religion has destroyed"

True but why are you counting Christianity among those? What evidence do you have that it's done anything but good for western civilization?

        Comment Hidden ( show )
          -
        • I should have said "Christendom". "Christianity" is the way of enlightenment founded by Jesus Christ, the son of God. "Christendom" is an umbrella term to refer to all religions claiming to be Christian, most of the heavily corrupted (watch for my story), as the Apostle Paul predicted. (2Timothy 4:3,4)

I'll admit you're right about the child molestation. That isn't even what bothers me the most. It is the veneration of violence among the Romans that fills me with repulsion, though I suppose even that is not totally unique to them. I still think it would be cool to be a Visigoth, though.

          • It's better to be violent and create peace then to be loving and breed war.

It's funny that you mention Catholicism. What should be done? If an idea destroys should it be destroyed? Should the priesthood be arrested? The cathedrals boarded up? What about Muslims, Atheists, New Age Intellectuals and Fascists? Racists, Hindus, Socialists and Buddhists? Should society forbid these ideas as well?

The world suffers because we've allowed everyone to go off into their own little corner and believe as they like but it won't be until we're all on the same wavelength that there exists peace among us.

But even then being on the same wavelength doesn't guarantee anything; it must be the right frequency or else the effort is doomed as it was for the USSR when they united under Communism.

            • "But it won't be until we're all on the same wavelength that there exists peace among us."

I couldn't agree more, and I respect anyone who isn't afraid to say that.

And I did not mention Catholicism. It's funny YOU mention that (I certainly was referring to it though). For the record, I do not think that any belief system should be legally suppressed; my own religious beliefs have undergone this enough.

I'm diagnosed with Bipolar they can't draft me.

But, If you don't have a diagnoses just get diagnosed with OCD by saying you have to wash your hands all the time and clean and organize and if something isn't in it's place then you freak out. It's the easiest way to get out of drafting.

Would it apply to women this time? Just asking because I'm a lady.

I think a ton of people would just disqualify themselves either for criminal activity or a mental or physical reason. It's too easy nowadays, back then you really couldn't pull that off unless you had some staggeringly obvious severe condition. But now it's like you can just read about a condition, act like you have the symptoms and bang, you're clear. Or even just say you are a drug addict-there ya go, they won't touch ya.

That's a good question, since the poll maker didn't say which country. (Although the USA is always presumed on the Internet in English language discussions.)

The question is made particularly good considering that military service is compulsory for women in at least one place in the world. (I only know of Israel at this time.)

And the fact that this guy has retained enough power to be a threat means that most of the country must be supporting him, or else the military would not obey him. It is not like he is single-handedly going around murdering people.
