I was eating breakfast and getting attacked by a 5 pound monster. I survived so I thought i'd check out IIN.

Interesting question. I use IIN for different reasons. Sometimes to have a laugh, sometimes to help, sometimes to be social, sometimes as a distraction when I've been concentrating on something for a long period.

I've spent the last two hours intensely focussed on a complex logistics problem that, because of constraints it's not worth me going into, it wasn't possible to map, model, or get any computer assistance with. It all had to be done in my head. It took me over an hour to visualise and build the model in my head and then nearly another hour to work out how to change the model so that the problem was fixed in such a way that the old model could exist simultaneously with the new, and both would work even if fired at the same moment.

It's difficult to describe the complexity of it other than it being like a workout for the brain that pushes up against the limits of what I'm capable of. I can feel my brain hurting a little bit, like a low-level headache which will disappear after about ten minutes.

I came here to disengage my brain and to give it a rest because part two and part three of the problem need to be tackled now. They're easier, though, and I can probably even do them and listen to music at the same time.

Top tip for anyone involved in study, or anything that requires heavy mental effort: do the difficult or unpleasant stuff first. It has you rolling down a slope where gravity increasingly assists you. Leaving the difficult stuff to the end has you battling uphill when you're already exhausted. It took me ages to work this out and caused unnecessary all-nighters. Natural human instinct is to tick off the easy things and get quick wins in reducing the outstanding list. It's the wrong instinct, though.

  • Listening to music, reading, browsing the internet, experiencing a problem, phoning college, and had IIN on another tab. I use it more than Facebook.
