What should the speed limit be?

Okay, I do NOT want a politically correct answer. There's tons of roadways where I live that have three lanes in each direction, plus a 2-way left turn lane (sometimes medians). Anyway, they set speed limits from 35 to 45 mph. Let's raise them!!! I can dream. Again, I do not want to have arguments with you snails out there.

35 mph (I'm a snail obstructing the flow) 1
40 mph (a snail on a mission) 3
45 mph (semi-reasonable) 7
50 mph (reasonable) 6
55 mph (now we're talkin') 5
60 mph OR MORE!! (let's get where we're going!) 20
Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

N/A I'd prefer no set in stone speed limit, just caution signs for curves and hills. People are generally actually pretty reasonable if you give them a chance to be.

You are right. People will not go too fast once they are accustomed to the roads. Signs are all that is necessary.

On highways there should not be a speed limit, you should just be able to drive as fast as you like.

Of course, on secondary roads in populated areas you should watch your speed. But the speed limit should be based on the local situation, not on the law. Then you get the situation like "you can easily drive 80 km/h on this road, but the law says that type of road should have a speed limit of 50 km/h so that's the speed limit." That doesn't work.

It depends wear these limits are placed. If there are any schools or in somewhere busy then it should be somewhat low. For areas that have hills there should be special signs or pardons for going over the limit because when you go up a hill it is very difficult to control the speed of a car when it goes down. I wish I could give you a better answer but I can't because I don't drive.

On a highway or normal motorway - no limit! People can determine a speed themselves. There should be a "Minimum speed limit", but no maximum.
As for city driving - keep the limits. Doing 60 in a city is completely stupid!

In Germany, most of the Autobahn (highway) has no limits.
Maxed out my car at 250kph. (155mph)
Maxed out a sports car at 320kph (198mph) Best day EVER!

It sounds great and all but some cars don't perform well at high speeds white there are others which keep accelerating till there is no end. And so the speed difference is far to great and the would have more of a impact. and it would make it increasingly more difficult to overtake as you have to prepare alot more and wait for a much bigger gap to overtake. And lets not forget thinking distance will increase dramatically and so will braking distance especially on big luxury cars.

No speed limit would be nice. As long as you aren't driving like an asshole, the cops should find something better to do.

We have a couple of streets here where they removed all the signs, traffic lights and even the pavements. I thought it was a disaster waiting to happen but from my amazement - traffic went smoothly - as a driver I was made more aware of my surroundings and though I was going at a slower speed, there was none of that stop and go flow you get with the damn traffic lights.

LOL you would hate the speed limits we have here.

On most arterial roads the speedlimit is between 50km/h (32MPH) to 60km/h (38MPH)

On motorways the limit is between 100km/h (60MPH) to unlimited speeds. It does get confusing on our motorways as the speedlimit varies as you cross provincial lines.
