What's your view on hacktivists?

"Hacktivism (mix of hacking and activism) is the use of computers and computer networks to promote political ends, chiefly free speech, human rights, and information ethics.
It is carried out under the premise that proper use of technology can produce results similar to those of conventional acts of protest, activism, and civil disobedience. Web site defacements, URL redirection, denial-of-service attacks, information theft and dumping, web site parodies, typosquatting, and virtual sabotage are common examples of hacktivism." - Wikipedia

Many hactivists use hacking to expose corruption, in their leaking of confidential government files.

Who is one who performs an activity?

What is an active art, science or skill?

Who is a person that adheres to or advocates an activity?

They are computer hacks, nothing more.

Some media hack, thought this up, and sought to glorify them.

I have a huge problem with vigilantism, and hacktivism is part of that. Vigilantes don't offer anyone the right to a fair trail, they just act in whatever way they perceive to be right without giving people a chance to defend themselves. That doesn't sit well with me. What if someone sees me and thinks something I do is wrong, and decides on a whim to publicise all my personal information online? Why should they have a right to do that to me?

Many people use hacktivism for "good", but the ethics method itself is a entirely separate to whether the method is used for good or not. Hacktivism isn't necessarily "good" because it can also be used for "bad", it all depends on how the hacktivists choose to self-regulate. If the law isn't enough to stop people doing the wrong things then it's time to change the law, not take it into your own hands. That would be anarchy.

Hacktivism is a method, and just because a method is often used for the right reasons doesn't mean the method itself is right.

It's dangerous. They aren't accountable to anyone. That's what scares people about them so badly. They could collapse the stock market or make a launch scare and cause a nuclear holocaust. What they do and claim to stand for (anon specifically) is great. But it's implications are pretty terrifying.
