What's your opinion on the prank call that led to a nurse's suicide?

Okay, so there is this controversy going on about some recent news. If you're really interested in what happened, then you might want to Google it, but I will try to give the best explanation that I can:

A nurse (Jacintha Saldanha) was duped by a prank call by two Australian DJs pretending to be Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Charles in which they asked to be given some information about the Duchess of Cambridge's (a.k.a Kate's) condition at the hospital. The nurse has apparently committed suicide (though the cause of death isn't certain at this point). Nobody is exactly sure if her death was directly caused because of the prank call, but it seems very plausible. The DJs claim that they used the "world's worst accents" and weren't even sure what to do when the nurse was fooled by it. After Jacintha took the call, she gave the phone to another nurse. It was the second nurse who committed a breach in confidentiality by giving information to the DJs about Kate's pregnancy. The DJs have already apologized, but there is still a lot of controversy about this issue.

For hypothetical reasons, let's just pretend that it is 100% certain that the nurse committed suicide and that the direct cause was because of the prank call.

So, do you think the DJs should be blamed for the nurse's suicide?

Oh, and if you want to listen to the actual prank call, just watch the first half of this (though I think some of the prank was cut out):

DJs are to blame because they killed a person. 11
DJs are to blame because they asked for confidential info. 11
DJs shouldn't have done the prank, but were not to blame. 47
DJs were not to blame, nurse's fault for believing call & giving info. 28
No one (or only the suicidal nurse) was at fault here. 20

I don't care a bit about the royal family and rolled my eyes when the news broke about the pregnancy, doomed to have to listen to this fawning and gushing by the media for many months.

This nurse was doing her job and transferred a phone call. Pretty routine.

She must have had some other bad stuff going on in her life. For her to suicide over this foolisness with a couple of little kids to raise is 100 times as reprehensible as the prank phone call, which I thought was kind of funny in & of itself.

Blame the media that puts these meaningless figureheads on a pedestal for no reason besides getting people to watch, but nobody seems to have anything bad to say about the nurse who committed this intensely selfish act over what is essentially nothing.

It wasn't the intention of the DJs to cause this nurse such trauma that she'd take her own life (if, indeed, she did) and they shouldn't be blamed for her suicide.

However, out of respect, they should be taken off the air for an indefinite period. I'd have no problem with them continuing to be paid while on gardening leave, but it would be in very poor taste for them to continue with their show and to prank other people, given what may have happened.

Finally, the most important people aren't the DJs, the radio station owners, or the royal family, but the family, friends, and colleagues who have lost someone they loved. Perhaps angry and insulting Twitterers would find a better use of their time in sending messages of condolence.

I heard about this story earlier today. I don't think the DJs ought to be blamed because they didn't really mean any harm and they could never have known their actions would have such tragic consequences. I don't think the nurse should be blamed either though (although I also don't think the call was the only cause of her suicide, but I'll go along with your hypothetical), because it's not her fault she was treated so badly for her silly mistake (a mistake anyone could have made, really. I'm sure she couldn't have been the only one to make it if anyone else was put in the same situation).

It's just one of those things. Two DJs acted like idiots but meant no harm, and it ended up having tragic and completely unpredictable consequences. It's sad and completely avoidable, but sad and avoidable deaths happen every day. If anyone is the blame it's anyone who was bullying her over it, but even they could never have predicted the consequence.

No-one's fault, just a tragic accident.

That poor nurse Jacinta, and her poor family right before christmas. Her mind must have been in a termiol. As a devoted nurse who was dedicated yet fearing for her beloved job. My thoghts are with her family at can only be described as a tragic time.
. I wont lie before this tragic event (suicide) occured I laughed as did a lot of people I don't doubt at someone pretending to be the queen. However nooone myself included is laughing now.
About the prank call: well I have not just lost my dear mum because of a prank call so I don't think it is up to me to say too much, but I know (as do we all) that the D.J's could not have forseen the tragic events that would have unfolded and there is no doubt that they are devestated by their actions.
Put it this way if Jacinta had not felt so desperate that she felt the only way out was suicide we would have all still be laughing now. (Well those of us with sense of humour would anyway) it just goes to show how something with such inocent intentions can lead to tragedgy. xx

Well apparently she held her in great regards. You should not have messed with her or whoever did is messed up. What if she was actually related or close friends. How would you know?

The prank was funny and there was nothing wrong with it. The nurse overreacted. If she hadn't been a foreigner, she wouldn't have committed suicide. The hospital shouldn't have hired her in the first place.

IMO, The nurse massivly over-reacted, it wasn't even the nurse that took the call, it was the one that transfered the call, she ended her life for no reason, unless there was something personal and she just wanted an excuse
