What's your opinion of american law enforcement

The police seem to be a polarizing subject as of late. It seems like every other day there's some new, negative story involving the police on the news. But then again the police generally seem to do genuinely good work. What do you IINers think of Americas law enforcement officers?

They've got a hard job and they do it well 9
The police are glorified thugs 5
They're a mixed bag of good cops, bad cops and okay cops 21

Yes, some slack off and some abuse their powers. But don't forget there are individuals like Chief Clancy Wiggum, who dedicate their lives to ensure the utilization of law.

Since the good old USA has more of it's population (by percentage AND actual numbers) incarcerated than any other country on this planet, I don't think we can call it effective law enforcement. More a case of round up whoever they can so the system can make money for all those in the business.
Pitiful, is what I'd call it!

Yeah because the people in prison are totally innocent, I don't normally critize your comments, but you are fucking retarded on this one, the reason Muricas got so many people in prison is because of the 10s of thousands of shootings.

Yeah, like the thousands in prison for a joint or two; a real danger to society those criminals, right? And my personal favorite, imprisoning men for not paying child support, because of course, they can pay the child support on the 30 cents a day they earn in prison? Not to say there shouldn't be some punishment for neglecting those responsibilities, but how does prison help the children get what's due?

They don't imprison child support defaults until they're several thousand dollars in the hole and have made numerous alternative attempts to rectify the situation before imprisinment. Jail is a last resort.

How does it help? Well they usually manage to muster up the back payments once they get imprisoned.

It's fact. You HAVE to be in arrears at least $x amount and/or a certain amount (varies by jurisdiction) of time for them to even put a warrant out for your arrest.

After allowing plenty of time and chances to pay willingly, they will then garnish wages and tax refunds. Then they will threaten to take away your drivers license and possibly any professional license you have. If you still don't comply THEN you might get arrested. It's the absolute last resort. Your bail will be your arrears, or a percent of it.

You are an idiot. You base everything you comment about on this website from your own opinion or some outdated set of narrow minded viewpoints, basically showing your age.

Prison IS a last resort for deadbeat dads, they garnish salaries, they ruin credit, the system gives them plenty of chances to be responsible. Its just deadbeat dads are bums and don't care. Most of them actually willingly lose jobs because the courts garnish so much of their salary to go to a kid they feel isn't their "responsibility".

If you were to google 'the economics of prisons in the USA' I think you'd be shocked at the system, especially the privatizing of prisons.

No, not really. Private prisons, while I don't think are right, are a tiny part of it. I've hung with drug dealers, bootleggers, whoever, all my life and I know for a fact doing crime is worse in an election year. You get caught then and you are fucked.

So, just because you've "hung with drug dealers, bootleggers, whoever" you think you have a handle on the economics of the criminal justice system?
Are you really the IGNORANT or just talking out of your ass.
Everybody from the cop on the street to the executioner owes their job to the number of people who go through the system. Nobody gives two shits WHY they are going through the system or even if they should be going through the system. If the numbers go down then fewer people are needed by the system. So they all inflate the numbers to keep their jobs.

No, but we can agree that it's often a game.

Private prisons only make up 6-8% of all.

Cops only do what they can.

D.A's and judges are elected and have to make themselves look good.

I have been in jail a few times and I know what goes on.

It's my personal conspiracy that the police are the ones who run our country. Of course, lobbyists and big businesses have a ton of influence, but when it comes down to things like laws or even our foreign policy, I believe the cops are behind it.

First of all - I am not American but this is a general view of all police forces around the world.

Unfortunately there are a minority of officers who abuse their powers thus giving the entire force a bad image. I applaud the brave men and women who serve our communities with integrity.

I use to be a police officer. I would say it is inconsistent in America. Some departments receive excellent training, while some departments the quality is not there. The job attracts people with egos. You see a certain swagger among the rookies who strapped on the gun and shield for the first time and think they are hot shit and can't wait to draw their weapon for the first time, and you see the veteran guys that are gald that in reality, they probably never had to use it once their entire career.

The majority of police officers are good, well meaning men and women who are also very flawed in the same ways all humans are flawed, because like the rest of us, they are just people. Just like in any other profession you will find exceptional ones and terrible ones. Just like in any other profession, the mistakes always stand out above everything else, even though they are the minority.

I will say that regarding race, just like any other job there cerinly are racists, but they are a small minority. Also in my experience when people believe they are being singled out because of race, that is usually imagined. I was personally accused by drivers of stopping their cars because their race. The truth was in most cases Inwas oblivious to their race when I turned on my lights. I typically worked nightsz and the only thing on could see through the window was the glare of my own headlights. I really couldn't see who was driving.

Very low. I know people say there are good cops and bad cops, but I'll believe it when I see bad cop regularly getting arrested. Until then, it looks like there are only bad cops, and worse cops.
