What's your opinion?

So, you know, about this school shooting in Connecticut, which is so sad and makes me feel very depressed and sorry for their families and people who witnessed it, and all kids that are going to be so traumatised.
So, I was wondering, if kids could be hypnotized and they could "erase" this day from their memories, so they wouldn't remember anything, would it be morally good to do so?

Would you agree to do this to the kids?

Yes, I would 9
No, I wouldn't 18

I don't believe erasing bad memories is very helpful to society as a whole. If it's bad enough, our brain will repress the memory. But to willingly shelter yourself or others from reality is a dangerous path. Who is the right person to make that judgement call? Where do you draw the line? It is sad and tragic, but we are capable of dealing with the trauma. We will heal from this. But we need the opportunity to process the emotions so we can move on. Plenty of children have died in wars in the past and we dealt with the trauma as best we could. But we deal with it, not hide from it.

Our brains do not always repress painful memories, where did you get that idea from? It does happen but it's by no means inevitable.

Some children (and some adults too) are NOT capable of dealing with trauma and healing from it. You're contradicting yourself: you say if it's bad enough the brain will repress the bad memory (not true anyway) but we should deal with it, not hide from it?

You misinterpreted what I said and put words in my mouth....again. thanks for that. Sorry I wasn't more clear. I did not say we always repress bad memories. I probably should have added the word "can" to that statement, but by no means was it a blanket statement. It was kind of a throw away statement anyway. Do you think I'm stupid? Of course we don't always repress bad shit. Who thinks that? Why would you think i thought that, especially after talking about processing....sheesh.

How did I misinterpet "If it's bad enough, out brain will repress the memory"? It was blanket statement and now you've modified it to something I don't disagree with.

I don't know whether you're stupid or not, I can only respond to what you wrote, which is what I did.

So you probably should've expressed it differently and it was a throw away statement anyway? Just how was I supposed to know that?

I mispoke. Oops. Thanks for pointing out my error. It should be obvious that it wasn't meant to be a blanket statement based on the rest of my comment. But I guess I can't expect people to analyze every sentence I wrote from the past and see the same picture that was in my head. Perhaps I expect too much out of people. Im still shocked that this isn't considered common enough knowledge. Who isn't familiar with the concept of repressed memories?

I've had debates on IIN with people who say repressed memories don't exist and others who've never heard of them, so yeah, I do think your expectations are a bit high. I'm sure you also know that some professionals don't believe in them either, while others in the past have created false memories in vulnerable people's minds.

It's a very complex area and I don't think most people give a stuff
