I saw a library-style world atlas (one of those that you can barely lift) in a bookshop. It was an utterly beautiful piece of work, with at least four or five pages of info, maps, satellite data and demographics for every country. I knew I had to have it and was a bit dismayed that the price was 495GBP. I couldn't imagine paying nearly five hundred quid on a book.
I looked at it every time I was in the bookshop. Finally, I noticed a new edition had been published and this one was now 595GBP. But the old edition was still at the back with a reduced sticker on it. They'd dropped it to a fiver. They had two left and I bought them both on the spot (gave the second to my mate). A grand's worth of maps for a tenner.
Getting them home on the bus nearly killed me though. It's also about four times too big for any bookshelf and it crushes my legs when I read it in bed at night. But I love it and wouldn't be without it.
