Mulato(a) is for Latinos, mainly. I'm bilingual so that's the difference to me, I guess. In purely white culture I guess they'd just be mixed. I don't hang out where people are racist, so I'm sure that varies depending..

i used to say Mulatto but apparently that's now considered to be an unsavory term. I still don't know why though.

Interesting question! I call them mixed race. However, that doesn't always fly.
Take our president for example. He is half black and half white. Yet if anyone says anything negative about him, they accused of being racist. They say,"you're just saying that because he's black."
Can't I criticize his white half too?
