I won't personally replace mine until it starts having a lot of regular expensive problems I guess,
    It's currently at a bit under 144,000 and it's a Holden

As long as Total Average Cost (TAC) is dropping, you are saving money by keeping the car. When something needs to get fixed, the TAC will go up for a bit, and then continue to drop. So, I calculate how long I will have to drive the car after the repair to recover my cost. If I am 80% confident nothing else will happen during this time, I keep the car.

For the Hondas and Toyotas I have had, this is usually 205K to 230K miles (328K to 368K km)

    • Yes, you are saving money. Some people think it is best to keep a car newer than 5 years old but that is not true. The best economy is buy a car and keep it for as long as you can.

But you have to do the math.

Bravo. It seems as if you have studied microeconomics.

        • Yes, exactly. What sort of car do you have an American, Japanese or European?

            • That answers it. Japanese cars are so good for reliability. We have two Toyotas and they are so reliable.

I replace it when I the time and money required to both maintain and repair it might as well be spent on a car that won't cut so seriously into my finances and time I'm required to spend on school. In the case of my previous car which was paid off, it is easier to make a monthly payment on my current car than to have anticipated the large random expenses that would come up on my previous vehicle.

I'm keeping my car for as long as possible. I plan on replacing it when the cost of fixing it would be the same as buying another used car.

That's exactly what I was thinking. Sadly my last car, which was a Buick Regal, just completely died. It was and still is completely sad for me.

I'm sorry. It probably had a lot of memories. What are you driving now?

Having rides with a partner is not bad. You're in the car with someone cool.
