cctv has helped with solving a lot of crimes. i don't really mind if i'm being "watched" in a public space because i won't doing anything interesting anyway.
CCTV is good, cause it helps identifying vandals, thieves and other scum, generally keeping crime low.
Besides, you don't get privacy in public areas anyway. Nor do you need it, unless you plan on doing shady shit.
I think it's bad. I get that you shouldn't expect privacy in a public place, but you should be able to expect freedom from spying and tracking. This would enable the government to track someone's movements when there's cameras covering every inch of their journey. And when that have that kind of power, it's difficult for them to resist the temptation to use it, if it'd make their life easier (like if they could track some protestor's movements to quash his "troublemaking"). It has happened before, and not just in places like Russia and China, but in progressive first-world countries.
If people are worried about safety, then they can buy CCTV cameras for their own private homes and businesses. The police can also obtain these cameras' footage from the owner (once they've provided a warrant) should a crime occur in that location.
It's understandable in some scenarios. But it shouldn't be everywhere. I guess it doesn't matter though privacy ended after 9/11
Its public... so yeah people can see you in public areas so a CCTV camera just replaces what a person would be doing anyway.
Privately that crosses a line.
Its not that black and white. Overall its good but the supreme court shot down secret Chicago's surveillance program. They had drones in the sky that filmed everything 24/7 with facial recognition software and that happened in the city and they could go back to any time and see what happened there. I believe the courts shot it down because it violates the 4th amendment by watching people in their backyards with privacy fences. But I just googled it and it looks like its back up again.
That in my opinion is BS. They should have them in the sky filming your property. I just gave you the run down of the program its been a while since I read about it. So dont fault me if something is slightly off. They did have drones in the sky and courts shot the program down now its back
CCTV is good because it helps reduce crime and therefore police could use it to identify the offender.
CCTV is bad. Personally I always feel like I'm being watched if I get down and try to sniff someones asshole in a built up area.
