What is your definition of a troll?

People are always calling me a troll on facebook. This is probably because I use an obviously fake account and post controversial comments. The reason I use a fake account is because people are very judgy and if they see these posts on my real account, people I know may lose respect for me. All the things that I post I honestly feel. I will post with my fake account when I'm triggered. I do it to blow off steam. My definition of a troll is "Only people who lie in order to receive reactions and piss people off". Everyone is is valid. I'm not lying because I honestly feel how I feel and I use a fake account because I know that anyone could stumble across my comments and may not understand by attitudes toward life. Just because someone disagrees with you does not make them a troll. Just because someone's valid opinion is offensive does not mean they should have to shut up. Freedom of speech should always be valued. If you don't like a comment just ignore it. It's probably just a person's valid opinion. How would you define a troll?

Anyone who disagrees with me 2
Only people who lie in order to receive reactions and piss people off 14
Anyone who posts something that could be offensive 3
Anyone who posts using a fake account, no matter how valid their opinions may be 3
Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

Only people who post things specifically to get a reaction. Those who post offensive things but honestly believe them aren't trolls. And while I will often disagree with them, I respect them enough to leave them alone.

trolls are like the class clown of the internet. disruptive for a laugh. just having offensive opinions or using a fake account isn't trolling. but if those are your true feelings, which is really the fake account? 🤔

  • The problem is that the options you've given aren't exactly mutually-exclusive, from my perspective anyway.

I've been a troll for many years, and while it consumes valuable time that I could spend on something more worthwhile, I still feel drawn to it at times. Sometimes I have knowingly trolled just for laughs (like that time I claimed to be 329 years old and I could survive off a diet of seagulls), but at times I have adopted fake names and actually expressed opinions in order to see if others could find something wrong with them, and I enjoyed reading others responses and adding to my knowledge. Honestly, I have probably learned more about certain subjects just by showing up in places where the highly-educated are likely to post, and posting bullshit until the regulars set me right than I have in all my years of schooling.

People that mess with random people. Sometimes it is just for a laugh, sometimes it is mean.

Trolls aren't people who just post offensive shit. Trolls are people who post fake stuff.

A troll can take many different forms, it definitely doesn’t have to involve lying. That’s just silly. Almost as silly as this:

“Freedom of speech should always be valued. If you don't like a comment just ignore it.“

That’s a hell of a contradiction. Freedom of speech isn’t being valued very much if you want people to shut up if they disagree with you. If you want the freedom to give an offensive opinion, other people have the same freedom to give their own valid opinion too.
