What is "trolling"?

I'm obviously quite out of touch here but...what is "trolling"? I keep seeing the word "troll" all the time on this site and I'm confused by what it is. Folks call each other "trolls". They say someone is "trolling". Is it a noun, a verb an adjective?

I always thought a troll was an ugly little creature that lived under bridges.

    Trolls don't live under bridges in this neck of the woods. Here they live on a boat.

    A troll us someone that insults you or says really stupid things to make you angry. Example: how do I use the Internet? Example: wtf is wrong with you you stupid retard. YouTube is a movie... Not a fucking site with movies. Jesus
