What is the point of shotguns for home defense?

I am not against firearm ownership. However, I've never understood why someone would need a shotgun instead of a handgun for self-defence. It just seems a bit overkill to me, unless you're preparing for a zombie apocalypse.

They are the single most effective home defense weapon that is legal, and are very practical.

They are easy to aim (including under stress) and the miss rate is far less than a pistol or a rifle (most pistol shots miss the target unless you are extraordinarily well trained - including stress reaction training).

Rifles tend to be more accurate - however the typical bullet size is 0.3" or less in diameter - and even if it hits aperson a rifle bullet (or pistol bullet) tends to do fairly minor damage unless you hit a few critical spots that are about the size of a US 50 cent piece. In many cases they punch a small hole just through flesh and tissue - and do not stop an attacker (who may not even notice that they were shot).

A home defense shotgun with bird-shot typically has at least a 1" area pattern (and could be 3+") and delivers a major impact and wound unlike a rifle or pistol bullet (even if using an expanding rifle or pistol slug to maximize damage area).

Even slugs are vastly larger in diameter and deliver more impact energy than a rifle or pistol bullet.

So: Easier to hit the target - substantially more impact on the target = far more effective self defense weapon.

Now admittedly they are not as easy to hide (you cannot have one under your pillow); but no one who is serious about home defense should not have at least 1 shotgun quickly available in the house (even if your immediate reach gun is a pistol).

Want to kill something in short ranges? Shotgun. Want to actually hit what you are aiming for with less of a chance of missing with a tiny bullet? Shotgun. Want a cheap weapon? Shotguns are cheaper because they cost less to make the barrel.

Why not? Bigger is better when it comes to weaponry, isn't it? If you can have the more effective weapon, you might as well take it.

Bigger is better! That's why for ultimate home security you buy an M134 minigun! To be honest, owning a minigun would be cool, even if it costs between 14 and 40 dollars for one second of fire, depending on settings.

Man, I can't hear myself think over the eagle that's screeching freedom over my head! XD

Theoretically, yes. Practically, no. Since pretty much no one can afford to purchase a minigun, it is impractical for home defense. However, if you found one for cheap, I don't see why not, besides legal reasons.

Well if aren't gunning for accuracy there is a crank fire conversion for triggers. 1 crank = 3 rounds down range. Crank fires are legal because theres a seperate motion for each trigger pull. Add that to a belt feed system and you got a poor mans machine gun. Though your barrel is gonna get worn down substantially faster.

    • They're less practical tho.

They aren't, though. They're just larger.

They are only less practical to carry on your person. Otherwise - they are far more practical for actual use in a self defense situation.

Most "challengers" immediately back down when faced with a shotgun - while they do not when faced with a pistol. They know the odds are not in their favor with a shotgun, and may be experienced at taking pistols away from people.

Not at close range, which you probably will be inside your house.

The pros are that you get a lot of stopping power. If you're hit with a 12 gauge in someone house you are almost always gonna be outta the fight immediately. You can get a good shotgun CHEAP. Probably find a good used one around $100 at a pawn shop.

The cons is that there is a lot of recoil which can be bad for smaller women or kids. Also you dont have as many rounds (about 6 if youre lucky). If its a pump the fire rate isnt that fast. Also if it becomes a shootout outdoors after about 200 feet it gets hard to shoot accurately (but then again its even less accuracy holding a pistol).

Guns are lame, hatchet is the correct answer.

If I have to kill things, I prefer to make a mess, up close.

Look out! There's an intruder behind you! They're everywhere. I kill 5 intruders per day on average.

I guess a shotgun would be more useful in that case. Not going to get up if they get shot with buck shot.

I remember when I first shot a shotgun. We were moving crap out from some Woodlands we own and one of which was a stripped out car. Before getting a guy to move the car itself to a scrapyard we took shots at it. Tore right through the door. Some managed to pass through to the other door.

Well I'm no gun expert, in fact I am strongly against guns, but presumably because the target would be at your bedroom door when you shoot him so he'd be at close range, which is ideal for a shotgun. Also the shot from a shotgun sprays out, making you unlikely to miss.

A hand gun can go through the intruder and the wall and into a place that you don't want it. A shotgun does not require aiming, other than pointing it in the correct direction and pulling the trigger. The shot will not leave the room that you are in, unless you are loaded with a rifled slug or 00 buckshot.

My dad gave me a little shotgun on my 16th birthday that his dad gave him on his 16 birtbday. It was my only personal protection peice for years living out in the middle of no where. I like to keep rifled slugs in it. I really feel sorry for the son of a bitch that gets shot with a 12 gauge slug. Its literally a canon. If it hits you you are going down right away. With a 9mm I've seen videos of people who were shot several times and stayed in the fight. It takes too long to bleed out from a 9. The shotgun is gonna stop you right away. If you take a slug to the stomach its literally gonna blow a huge hole through your body. If you hit them in the head their head will literally explode. If it hits an arm or a leg the whole thing is gonna come off. You get the picture.

Me personally if I think there's a threat in my house im going for my AR15. I like that I have 40 rounds in the magazine and tere is basically 0 recoil. I can shoot accurately and I have alot of shots to land a kill shot. Thats why I mounted a flashlight on the AR. While it may not have the stopping power up close that a shotgun has the amount of ammo you get more than makes up for it. Also an AR15 goes through body armor and its really accurate at a distance. A 12gauge slug might not go through the body armor always but would still probably kill you. Id prefer it to go through tho.

I say “I AM ARMED” and they hear that muthafukka cock, they’ll leave. And also the separation of the pellets, you’re more likely to hit a target.
