What is the difference bt. “nerd” and “smart”?

How come people call smart people “nerd”? I don’t understand. I looked it up and it says “boringly studious and lacks social skills”. But this girl in my class who’s unbelievably smart, doesn’t study but get A’s and skips school a lot and she’s super friendly and funny. But just because she wears glasses, have braces and frankly, her fashion isn’t that great, people call her “nerd” and make fun of her. Are they using the word correctly? She doesn’t lack social skills and she’s not excessively studious and she’s definitely not boring. (English is not my first language, btw).

Those people are asshole, they are probably jealous of her because she is better than them in studies and more social. Its better to stay away from people like that and not take them seriously, their opinions are irrelevant.

Well, those people who think your friend is a nerd are assholes. The world is full of assholes. A lot of people who are thought by others to be needs are actually pretty cool.

Whether or not someone is considered a nerd is largely a subjective matter. Opinions are like assholes, everyone's got em.

At least I once thought that nerds were smart people with a particular style to them with like their clothes, attitude, way of talking and thinking about life as a whole, like Revenge of the nerds, they are brilliant at math, science, etc., but they don't usually socialize, act, talk, dress, or think like anybody except their own kind.
I thought just smart people who weren't nerds could socially talk and act like anybody, have a similar world view as anyone, and dress like anybody, they could even be a football quarterback, but they'd also happen to be a math genius or science whiz, or be gifted in electronics, or anything academic.

Nerd is usually a derogatory term for people matching the description you're explaining. It's also used for smart people as well and, as such, the term is usually used for either smart or non social or enjoying media the majority don't or an outcast or a mixture of the above including other character traits that don't match up with the majority of students.
Other words such as geek are also used however I believe there is a difference between a nerd and a geek. Nerds are usually smarter in class whilst geeks are smarter when it comes to a certain (or multiple) topics which, usually, revolve around medias.

  • I've always wanted to fuck a nerdy girl with braces and glasses. You will want that at some point in life, too, so do it now.

It's used more as a derogatory in my experience.

the word 'nerd' has been bound to how people look; because of how movies abuse the word.

nerd means someone who is interested in school more than social life.

geek means someone who pays a lot of attention to his geeky hobbies and ignores both social life and school. (like a hard core gamer)
