the 1990's because that's when movies stopped being predictable. in the 80's almost every single movie had the same exact plot.
    boy meets girl
    falls in love
ruins it by being a douche
he changes and learns an important life lesson in the process
girl forgives him and they are reunited in an emotional scene. blah blah blah

The first short with a story line is "The Great Train Robbery", and the first feature length film was "The Story of the Kelly Gang." Neither, BTW, are exonerating the Klu Klux Klan. "Birth of a Nation" was originally called "The Clansman". Your poll made a poor choice.

I prefer the 60s and I adore many of Sidney Poitier's movies from that era.

Sure, there are the old greats. But they're legendary for discovering things that are really effective in movies. As the decades go on, we are able to apply more and more knowledge to films: artistry, effective plot lines, technology, and social revelations. In my opinion, the movies (by and large) get better and better.

I have favourites from every decade, and a pretty even distribution. I suppose the 90s might just win, but I don't see the point in making any declaration. As long as good films keep being made I'll keep watching.

2000's has the most votes cuz i reckon most on this site are kids, am i wrong? in my opinion 2000's is prob the weakest, except for movies like "amores perros", "memento" and "sideways", and please dont reply and tell me about lord of the rings, cus its shite.
For me the 70's was easily the best, someone already listed a load of movies up there but i could add another 50 to it if i wanted. 90's would be a close second (magnolia, fight club, seven, three colours trilogy, pulp fiction, shawshank redemption, goodfellas, being john malkovich etc etc) oh, ummm maybe the 90's is the best lol, who cares, i just love good films, i dont care who made them or when they were made.

  • This should have been genre and style rather than time period.

I said the 1940's because that was called the Golden Age of movies... Casablanca was a good choice, but the film associated with the 1940's should have been Citizen Kane, because it's considered the greatest movie ever.

Birth of a National was probably the best choice for the 1910's. I've only seen a small bit of it, and a masterfully filmed Rebel charge notwithstanding, it made me ill. But in the words of Roger Ebert, BoaN was an evil movie, but that doesn't make it a bad movie.

The Jazz Singer was a questionable call. I'd rather watch Charlie Chaplin's films of that era if given a chance, although The Jazz Singer was the first film to utilize audio technology.

The 30's with King Kong, you made the right choicer.

Ben Hur was a dubious choice for the 1950's. Charlton Heston's version of the film was the greatest, though not the first version to ever be released on film.

The Sound of Music for the 1960's? I don't think so. Breakfast at Tiffany's would have been a much better example. I'm not sure if Dr. Strangelove can be considered a representative film of the 1960's, but it was better than The Sound of Music!

Jaws for the 1970's? Not a bad choice. Rocky, Taxi Driver, and Star Wars would have been better choices, but the one movie that represented the 1970's was Airport, as it started a Hollywood trend in disaster flicks.

The 80's with ET.... Great choice!

The 1990's with T2, I suppose is also a good choice. Boyz N The Hood would have been a good choice, too. (Since it highlighted South Central LA in movies the same way NWA highlighted South Central LA in Rap.)

Avatar wasn't a bad choice for the 2000's, but Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone would have been a better choice... But it makes me sick to see how many people chose the 2000's for being the best decade. Other than Harry Potter, the 2000's can otherwise be defined as nothing but remakes and even more remakes!

    • Only had one 1960's slot. Cool Hand Luke is a wonderful film. I love it. My favourite 1960's film is The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, but I didn't even include it in my own poll because I was thinking about other people and making the poll fair. Breakfast At Tiffany's was in the mix too.

I do love Jaws, but for the 1970's, I so wanted it to be One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, The Godfather, Dog Day Afternoon, or The Conversation. Joeaverage has a point. Seventies films are amazing.
