What is difference between how real mafia operates and “movie/tv” mafias?

Always kinda wondered that? I mean, yeah, I like watching “The Sopranos” or maybe like “Goodfellas” “The Untouchables” “Casino” or “Scarface”? As far as “entertainment”, I love watching about Mafia and organized crime!!!

But that’s not the question: Question would be: What is the difference between say “Reality/How real Mafia operates” and “TV/Movie/Entertainment Mafia Families”? Would you say they pretty much act and behave and are pretty much the same? Or what would you see as main DIFFERENCE between Real and TV mafias? Thanks. Just trying to educate more on it!!

    The mafia is made up exclusively of Sicilians.

    The mob is not.

    It's mostly tiered

    A gang is a criminal enterprise with a soft hierarchy, little to no corruption in the local politics. Viewed as a pest to goverments.

    A mafia/yakuza is a criminal enterprise with a rigid hierarchy that can be hereditary. With corruption to the local goverment, with varying levels of nuicence or useful to the goverment. The yakuza is far the most successful at goverment and social acceptance. They have the capacity to regulate themselves.

    A cartel is a large scale criminal organization that has entire branches dedicated towards their revenue sources. They incorporate gangs, goverment officials, and social trust/fear to leverage their control. At the highest levels they can be considered a defacto goverment with a high ability to regulate themselves.

    When it comes to these criminal groups it's best to consider them to be warlords or monopolies of particular areas of illicit buisness. They do not accept competition. It's just that they have tiered levels of outward control of their territory and populace.

    Mafias are nice people, they offer to light a cigarette, they give you money, and they sell cocaine, go near the Don and he'll tell you to act like a man. At least he's teaching you man skills, so you can make it in the real world. 😂

    Having known that type when I was a kid there's very little truth in how Hollywood shows them. Goodfellas was pretty close. But even that was cleaned up. Mafia guys are obnoxious scary brutes.

      My friend says the ones that are considered as “Based on Real/true stories” are the ones worth watching. The ones that are just made up fiction never happened are not worth it he told me?

        Yes to give the story that's true. Mike Franzese seems to know what he's talking about. But for the persona they don't portray reality. Those guys would kill you as soon as look at you. And the "honor code" on the Mafia is a myth. Btw The Sopranos is totally phony because if they ever knew that a mafioso was going to a therapist he'd be whacked and probly the therapist too because they'd never know what they talked about.
