What is christmas to you?

What does Christmas mean to you? Which of these applies the most to you? Personally, I've been a bit anti-Christmas for the last few years. But last year I thought, might as well try and enjoy it and do something positive too... so I gave a homeless guy some food and water. For me it's become about giving to charity (just a little - within personal means) and reflecting on what's happened over the year. I still don't care for it that much and think the pressure on people to have a good time and get everything perfect is ludicrous (not to mention the hyper consumerism element....) But it's not all bad. So, what do you think?

I'm a Christian, I celebrate for religious reasons. 7
Christmas is mostly for my kids 2
Time with friends and family 18
It's alright... excuse to relax! 9
An opportunity to reflect on the previous year 2
Couldn't give a damn 17
Usually a total scrooge but going to try and enjoy it 2
Helping those in need and/or giving to charty 2
A combination of these things (please comment) 8
Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

King of kings and Lord of lords. One day every knee will bow to him.

I hate the consumerism of it. And the fakeness of people drive me crazy at times. I don't understand why people can't be nice to each other all year round. And I dislike that people don't really know what it means to give. But I celebrate it with family as they are Christian and it means a lot to them. However with my chosen family I celebrate the Solstice.

I'm sure my christian family believes it to be a night of drunken debauchery but it isn't. It's a time to gather and be with loved ones, however they came to be.

I'm not a druid or anything but I have always liked the idea of a celebration of the winter solstice; the idea that the low point has passed and a new season's worth of crops are now approaching. I like the idea of celebrating at the hardest possible time and celebrating something so positive (i.e., that it's ending).

I know a certain religion borrowed the winter feast and changed the date of the birth of an important prophet to it make it easier to convert locals to their own beliefs but that has meant that the tradition persisted and I'm glad about that. I'm also happy to let Christians continue to share our celebration with us. ;)

P.S. In return, I celebrate both Easter and Shrove Tuesday with them.

I WAS going to choose ''I don't give a damn'' but that was only because I get so irritated by holiday stuff (such as the commercialism, holiday music, the hype etc).

But on Christmas Day it doesn't matter. I like having family come over and all that. And that's what I think it's all about.

  • A time of celebration; being with a family. Very rarely do I think about the mindless platitudes people give to each other or the business aspect of it as it was never apart of my experience in the first place.

    Merry Christmas guys!

  • Time with family and friends. I haven't seen my mom and brothers in five years, my friends since 9th grade. Of course I could visit them anytime but Christmas time has been the only chance I could get a break. :)

I'm generally a bit of a Scrooge but I take the time as an excuse to relax and spend time with friends and family.

  • I'm not religious but I love any excuse for family and friend gatherings with amazing food. Both last year and this year I haven't gone home to be with my family, since I'm in another part of the world (plane tickets are sort of expensive! Got here by sailboat...) but I still have friends and wonderful food to look forward to. So in your answer choices, I guess Christmas is a time for relaxing, friends, family, food, reflecting on the past year and looking forward to the next one!

I have to say, just as a side note, I really do miss the snow and winter-ness of New England (US). I'm in the Eastern Caribbean right now and somehow it just doesn't feel like "Christmas" when it's still 80 degrees.
