What is an american accent?

There are so many accents within america, like southern, boston, baltimore, country and california accents. What does it mean when someone in another country says something like "I want an american accent"? Do they mean our way of speaking, or our speech patterns like saying "like" in almost every sentence (mostly us girls)? Or is it just based upon the way other people hear some americans talk? Or do they mean a specific accent in our country when they say they like/hate how americans speak?

I've been thinking and wondering about this for a while. Thankyou if you have an answer or if you jut tell me what you think. As always I hope you have a nice day :)

Usually people will mean the sort of accents that actors and hollywwod types usually have. As a Brit, most American accents sound pretty much the same to me; I have to hear them together to tell the difference. It is easier to tell the differences with our own countries accents because we can compare them with our own.

There is no definite "american" accent. If you go to alabama they will talk a whole lot different than if you went to new york.

  • well, when americans say we want a british accent, it means the exact same thing. in britain, there are many different regional accents. but as a whole, we interpret their accents a certain way, ie. the british accent. on the other hand, they interpret our american accent a certain way, and say they like it and such. get it?

It's whatever accent is generally accepted as being the standard for a country, and the one which most others are similar to.

This would be considered 'The' American accent http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_American

You ask "What is an American accent" well people often know a British accent but there is not a lot of differentiation between those either people just say "British" and often when they say "British" it is referring to English. I think a specific type of English accent as well.

However to answer your question I think when most people think of an "American accent" they are thinking about the California skater boy/beach boy accent. "Hey man whats up! Oh my god that is totally gnarly! Dude sweeeet! Oh so hardcore." kind of like that.

When they think of the Australian accent they are probobly thinking about "Steve Irwin"(crocodile hunter) type of accent.

I think the most notable accents from the Us are Southern "I want to make some apple pie sugar". The western "Gitty up little horsey!" and California "Hey dude wassup"! I think the most noted ones from UK is the English "Would you like tea and crumpets", the Irish and Scotland.

There are so many English Accents, as well as so many different Irish accents and then there are all the different Welsh accents too..and l have to laugh out really loud when I see movies like PS I Love You and hear the actor trying to use them all at once...like a mixed stew of accents...and pretending to be Irish.
I am very quick at pinpointing an accent. Even got to differenciate between a few of the American ones in a short while. Most Amrericans are easy to understand because the vocabulary is a lot simpler than English speakers use.
Some English accents are quite difficult to understand, even for the trained ear, and some Scots accents are also filled with Gaelic, as the Irish are with their own language and the tone of it stays with them when they speak in English. My dearly beloved is an Irish man and, even he ,has a problem sometimes to understand some accents from his own land, even tho' he speaks fluent Irish himself.

'like' using it repeatedly and saying stuff like 'omigod!' is called a valley girl accent, i use it for fun because i did grow up in america and spoke with one but now i have an english accent and put on an american one for fun. but with that i can tell if people have fake accents, its soo annoying!

According to Americans there is something called a british accent, but sometimes northern accents are so different to those of middle class london that i can't understand what northerners are saying!
