What if your spouse had very different lifestyle plans than you?

If your spouse wants to live a simple, green life and you are not into that very much, what would you do?

By a simple life, I mean getting rid of things like cable TV/internet, shopping anywhere but thrift stores when necessary, farming, making everything you can yourself and so on.

I couldn't even attempt that, I'd probably just leave. 26
I'd give it a try but no promises to stay. 25
It would be hard to get used to but I'd do it and stick by my spouse. 20
I'd let my spouse do their thing but I'd only half-ass it. 24

I'm not even going to half-ass it. They can do what they want but I'm enjoying my modern conveniences.

Depends, im flexible. Never judge someone till youve tried on their shoes so id give it a shot or at least compromise.

I would let him go and try it out, so he can discover if it's really for him before I would jump in with him. What if he changes his mind in a few months and you both have to re-establish your lives? I think you need to take baby steps to make a full lifestyle change.

Wouldn't this be something you discussed or figured out before you actually got married?

    • People change. If you get married when you're a naive 22 year old, do you really think you'll be the same exact person at 35? You live, you learn and with that comes new ideas and change. What the hell does a person @ the age of 20 or so know about ANYTHING? No one knows fully who they are or where their life is headed at that age. Are you now exacctly the same and exactly where you thought you'd be when you were 20?

ah well that's where I guess I'm different ... my love and I both met after we'd turned 35.

so we're less likely to change into something different.

    Say bye bye....

Divorce is the only logical solution....other than not getting married in the first place.

  • There are many factors but for argument's sake I'd propose a compromise; we both keep what we want in our lives and reject what we don't, if we can't live together whilst doing that then we break up.

    • But if you've already been living the typical way with all the modern stuff, couldn't you just give it a whole-hearted try? You never know, you might actually like it!

Wouldn't it be wonderful to have a spouse who wants to reject the abject consumerism that we have all fallen prey to. Delightful!

I feel the same way. Buying brings nothing.

  • Oops, I meant to say not shopping anywhere but thrift stores, I said the opposite in the description!
