    I had a friend like that.

    Long story short, she couldn't fix her problems because X was in the way. X was in the way because of Y reason. And Y would never be solved because it was impossible.

    For many people, the problem is never solved -not- because of ignorance of the solution but because the solution isn't convenient.

    People know, but they don't understand.

    I agree with noopiepoe. Do everything in your power to show support AND have hope for them. They need to know that you value them. Be strong and compassionate and hope for the best.

    Try and help them! Ultimatley, it would be their responsibility to address the issue, but I'd support them and encourage them to talk about it - why they're doing it etc. The power of talking about things (no matter how awkward or upsetting) should never be underestimated.

    Thinking about the few friends I have I would be shocked. Knowing how I am I would probably back off a little.
