She-male and he-male are vague, slang terms. Transgender includes both, and then the distinction is either FTM (originally female converting to male) of MTF (originally male converting to female). But then there's the issue of just how far an individual chooses to go with the conversion. Do they take hormones, but leave the genitals as is? Or have the final, irreversible surgery? There are a lot of guys out there that find a female-looking person, but having a cock, to be pretty erotic and interesting. But not interesting enough to commit and tell all their friends about their TS girlfriend.

Long but fairly expert post:-

Badly written poll (she-male is a sex industry term, he-male correctly just means an ultra masculine man), but it's the thought that counts.

I take it 'she-male' should read 'transwoman' or 'M2F'/'MTF' (I personally prefer the term with the 2), and 'he-male' should read 'transman' or 'F2M'/'FTM'. If you want to be exact about surgery you could specify 'pre-op' (going to), 'post-op' (has already), 'non-op' (not going to), but the general feeling in the trans community these days is that these things only need to be specified as a technicality and are discountable in terms of gender identity. I can see, however, that a poll might be interested in distinguishing between congenitally genitally variant intersex people/hermaphrodites and those who define as third gender or non-gender but were born male or female in all but mind. Also you could distinguish between intersex people who define as such, those who define as female and those who define as male. There could also be a catagory 'More than one gender identity', which would encompass those respondents above who talk about switching back and forth. I think that's nine catagories in total, ten with 'Other'. That's including bog standard 'Male' and 'Female' but excluding the surgery questions.

Questions on masculinity/femininity would make up a separate poll.

Of course none of these polls are particularly scientific because they are only answered by two sets of people: those interested in the topic and those who feel morally obliged (US: obligated) to answer every poll on the internet before they settle down to study/work ;-)
